Hi, each time I reboot my PC (Windows 7 x64) or notebook (Windows 8 x64) I get the following popup from Norton Internet Security 2013 appearing 3 times displaying: "You are connected to a shared network". Is there any way to disable this popup from displaying 3 times on each reboot? Thanks
Hi antares
Check for Norton updates manually and then recheck until there are no more updates restarting the computer as required.
Try running autofix by clicking the Norton icon, click support, click get support (or right click the Norton icon in the task bar and click Get support) let it run then restart the computer. It should tell you if any items where fixed. If you get an error message about MBAM then just click on skip on the error screen.
If the above fails to sort it out then the below task may but wait a while to see if anyone else has any other suggestions.
You may have a corrupt installation of the Norton product.
Download and run the Norton remove and reinstall tool.
Norton remove and reinstall tool download link below.
After running the Norton removal and reinstall tool, run live updates as many times as it takes to get, no more live updates, restarting as requested.
You might like to backup the personal data and you’ll need to backup or export in both formats your identity safe and any other users identity safe if it is used, before doing the above.

Hi,
Sounds like you have a home network and you are being told when each of the computers connects.
Keep us posted

Hi, I don't have a home network. The PC is a single computer connected to an ADSL modem that provides direct internet connection (no router or anything else). Same with the notebook. Is this a security hazard or a corrupted installation as suggested above? Thanks
Just to be clear, this is an actual pop-up box you are seeing, not something you are simply finding in the Norton History logs?
It happens me too. Isn’t it due to VMWare virtual machines? (Even not actually running).

Another possibility
Hi everyone, I was going to update my post with some new findings that coincide with your observations. I went to Control Panel/Network and Sharing Center and I see 3 Connections listed there:
- Ethernet (the one I use to connect to the internet via ADSL)
- VMware Network Adapter VMnet1
- VMware Network Adapter VMnet8
I tested disabling both VMware network connections, rebooted, and NIS2013 will popup just one message displaying "You are connected to a shared network". When I re enable both VMware connections it will popup 3 times as before. SO it seems that NIS2013 displays the popup message once for each network connection present in my PC/notebook. I checked each connection's properties and in the sharing tab the Internet Connection Sharing is disabled.
So the question again is, how to disable this popup? This is how the popup looks, it's displayed for a few seconds right above the NIS system tray icon after each reboot:
First to the modem, being a router or not.
If you have the PC and notebook connected to the modem at the same time with seperate cables and/or wireless, than you have a combination of a router and a modem in one box.
How many network cable connections are there at the back of the modem?
Does it have wireless?
This also means that you have a home network by definition and then your popup is normal, but only when you connect for the first time to your network.
Can you tell us the brand and type of your modem?
Your screenprint is not visible yet, as it has to be approved first.
You should be able to reset your network settings in NIS, but we can only tell you when we see the popup.
Regards, Hugo
Hi Hugo, let me clarify again: I have no network in my house, not wireless and not wired either. All I have is a Cisco ADSL modem wired to the wall socket on one side and on the other side a wire connecting the ADSL modem to the network card in either the PC or the notebook (I never use both together, it's either one or the other). No router, no wireless, NO HOME NETWORK. Here is the popup again:
"I have no network in my house, not wireless and not wired either"
Just thinking
Having a Modem / Router at home is still a Network, Even if only one system is connected to it. The word "shared" is the bit misleading as all you have is one system connected at any one time instead of say the word "Private" or Home" network.
Although I have neighbours that have dual Wired and Wireless Modem / Router and I can get their networks showing on my system (they do know) even though at their place they only have one system connected to their home network.
A Network is a network no matter how big or small. Or how systems are connected
Quads
Hi Quads, yes, the internet itself is a network that I'm connected to. But what I mean is that at home I don't have 2 or more computers connected in a home network (no wireless or wired LAN). As I said, I only have a single computer physically connected by a cable to the ADSL modem which connects to the internet.
Connected to a Shared Network could be also correct if you are now accessing your ISP / WWW, that is a shared or public network, Compared to if you are in a big company with lots of systems connected together inside the building but not all connected to the outside world then that is also shared network BUT not public.

Also I have seen, but only with a TIVO system where the TIVO detected being connected to a network all over again after the RJ45 cable had to be replaced.
If you are disconnecting one system ( or the other) so that only one of your systems is connected at one time as soon as you connect the system Norton may all of a sudden detect that you are connected to a Network (even if only of 1) and give the pop up. Where you were not detected to a network say half an hour ago.

why is the pop-up normal? it isn't needed. It used to not be on norton. Is norton a security product or a PC administrator?
