I'm planning to format my computer soon to start fresh. I'm a current 1 year subscription member for NIS 2010.
What are the steps I need to do get NIS 2011 and activate my account from there?

No problem --
New NIS 2011: Standard version -- ask if you have the netbook version since the KEYs are not interchangeable.
Click on this link -- NIS 2011 This will download a single file of around 90MB which you should save on your hard drive where you can use it again if necessary -- Do not select Run but use Save when asked and remember where you put it!
Install it -- if you are using VISTA or Windows 7 I recommend right mouse clicking on the downloaded file and selecting Run as Administrator since I find it gives less trouble...
After it is installed just click on Activate or Renew or Subscribe Now and you should get a box to enter the KEY from you 2010 version which is good until its time runs out.
If you get an error message about exceeding the permitted number of activations or if your MyNortonAccoount notches up another activation (if you had a 3 PC version) then just contact Customer Support using OnLine CHAT and they will sort it out in the central database ....
To contact customer support Click on this link and work on from there.
You can choose CHAT or Email; email or phone may have a long wait time and feedback from users tells us that CHAT is by far the best at resolving problems.
Note that that link is to the USA/CAN website so if you are located elsewhere I'm sure you will be able to find the equivalent location on your local Symantec website; some pages have a link at the top right where you can select the country you are located in.
Let us know how you get on and if you have any questions.
PS Run live update manually a few times after installing with a restart between until it shows you are fully uptodate.
Everything went just as you stated.
Thanks and Kudos.
Thanks for the feedback ... enjoy safe computing ....
