How to ignore scanning JPG files?

I run a large stock image site.  I have the backups of images spread across my PC in various places, which change locations a lot.

How do I set Norton so that it doesn't scan JPG images?  Scanning 200,000+ images which I know contain no malicious code is just silly.  But I can't seem to figure out how to exclude all jpgs.

Hi z0diac,

As far as I know, there is no way to exclude file types (which would be a pretty dangerous thing to do, if you think about it).  Your best solution would be to keep the jpeg files in a directory or two that could be excluded from scans.

This is from my NAV 2011 help file:

By default, the Intelligent Skip Scanning option is turned on.

When Intelligent Skip Scanning is on, Norton AntiVirus does not scan some of the common non-container files types that are available on your disk. The commonly available non-container file that Norton AntiVirus skips are .dll, .gif, .png, .jpg, .asf, .avi, .bmp, .htm, .ini, .css, .cur, .fon, .ico, .inf, .sys, .ttf, and .wav.

If a container file appears in a non-container file format Norton AntiVirus considers it as a non-container file and skips the file from scanning. However, Norton AntiVirus scans all the files that you receive through email even if the Intelligent Skip Scanning option is turned on.

When you turn off the Intelligent Skip Scanning option, Norton AntiVirus scans files of all types, regardless of their extension.

Unfortunately, due to the nature of all the scripts, and new directories being created by them on a regular basis, excluding via folder/directory is not possible.  And due to a bug in Norton, the exclude-folder option from scans does not always work (I have had my email client listed in the exclusion lists for years, and it repeatedly still scans inside it).  So even if it was possible, it wouldn't be possible.  :)

Thanks Dave!

I just checked and my “Intelligent Skip Scanning” slider bar is greyed out, but it is set to On.  I’m unsure as to why all my JPG files were being scanned.  I’ll have to check again next time I do a full scan.

I never noticed that before, but "Compressed File Scan" needs to be set to ON or the other setting is indeed "greyed out".

You may need to enable the compressed setting, I'm unsure if the skip setting is active in a greyed out state even if it set to on.
