How to restore files from an external drive done with Norton Ghost

Our office XP computer crashed this afternoon. I know that we had Norton Ghost doing regular backups on an external hard drive. My question is how do you restore from that backup?

PS. When I plug in the external drive into my own Windows 7 machine it has two folders:

- 9c590f17be2ef53d13bb00be2a

- Norton Backups

I can't open the first one (it says I don't have permissions) but the second one contains a bunch of files with the .v2i extension.

Any help would be appreciated?

Sorry. By crashed system I mean that it doesn't boot. It doesn't see the hard drive. I was thinking to install a new hard drive and restore it from the backup done with Norton Ghost. That's what I need help with.

Thats what I was getting at, you may need to resolve the hard drive problem first.

If your backup images are current and OK (the .v2i files), you should be able to fully restore the system.  But it's not going to work if you have hard drive problems or the system can't even find the drive.

You can try booting the system with the Ghost recovery disk, you didn't say what version of Ghost you were using but if you don't have a recovery disk you can download the one for version 15 here:

https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?docid=20091016094409EN&lg=english&ct=united+states&product=home&version=1&pvid=f-home&entsrc=redirect_pubweb

You can try booting the system with that disk and then go to Analyze>Explorer My Computer and try to access the hard drive.

Hopefuly you will be able to "see" it.

If the C drive is still present, try going to Analyze> Open a Command prompt and type:

chkdsk C: /r

Let us know what happens.

Thanks. I did burn the recovery disc and was able to boot from it. My issue now is that the Norton recovery program does not see my external drive (that is plugged in via USB.)

Follow-up: and as the hard drive goes, I already got a brand new one (of the same brand and size.) So that is taken care of.
