To set up an app password for Norton Safe Email, you must generate the password from your email provider’s website (e.g., Google, Yahoo, Comcast) and then use that unique password when prompted within the Norton Safe Email setup.
The Norton service itself does not generate the app password; it is created on the email provider’s side to allow secure access for third-party applications like Norton Safe Email, especially if you have two-factor authentication enabled.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Ensure that 2FA is enabled on your primary email account (e.g., Gmail, Yahoo Mail) if you haven’t already. This is a prerequisite for generating app-specific passwords with many providers.
- Access Your Email Provider’s Security Settings:
- Sign in to your email account through a web browser (not an email app).
- Navigate to the Account Security or Sign-in & Security section.
- Generate the App Password:
- Look for a section related to “App Passwords,” “Generate app password,” or “Third-party app access”.
- Select the mail app/device for which you are generating the password (you might need to select “Other” and type “Norton Safe Email”).
- Generate the password. The provider will give you a long string of characters (e.g.,
abcd1234efgh5678ijkl9012mnop3456).
- Copy the Generated Password: Copy this character string immediately, as it usually cannot be viewed again once you leave the page.
- Set up Norton Safe Email:
- Go to my.Norton.com and sign in with your Norton account credentials.
- On the dashboard, click on the Norton Safe Email tile.
- Click Add email account and enter your email address.
- When prompted for the password, paste the app-specific password you generated from your email provider’s site, not your primary email account password.
- Follow any remaining on-screen instructions to complete the setup.

To set up an app password for Norton Safe Email using your iOS phone, you must generate the password from your email provider’s website using your phone’s web browser, and then use that unique password in the Norton 360 app.
The Norton app itself does not generate the password; it only accepts the one provided by services like Google, Yahoo, or Outlook.
Step 1: Generate the App Password (Using Safari/Browser)
- Open the Safari app (or another web browser) on your iOS phone.
- Navigate to your email provider’s website (e.g., Gmail, Yahoo Mail, Outlook).
- Sign in to your email account.
- Find the Security Settings. Navigate to your account’s security section. Note: You typically must have Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) enabled to use app passwords.
- Look for “App Passwords” or “Generate app password.”
- Generate a new password for “Mail” or an “Other” app (name it “Norton Safe Email”).
- Copy the generated password. This is a long string of characters (e.g.,
abcd1234efgh5678ijkl9012mnop3456). You must copy it now, as it usually disappears once you leave the page.
Step 2: Use the App Password in the Norton 360 App
- Open the Norton 360 app on your iOS phone.
- Go to the Norton Safe Email feature within the app’s dashboard.
- Tap “Add email account” and enter your full email address.
- When prompted for your email account password, paste the unique app password you generated in Step 1, not your regular email password.
- Follow the remaining on-screen instructions to finish setting up the account.

Caveat: I’m not iOS. I’m not running Norton Safe Email.
