How to tweak NAV 2010 Classic for use on older/slower computers ??

I replaced NAV 2003 (part of NSW 2003) with NAV 2010 Classic, in an effort to pick an AV scanner with small footprint and low resource usage.  The purpose being to run NAV 2010 Classic on older/slower XP Pro Sp3 computers with about 512MB (or slightly more) memory.

Whereas NAV 2003 needed an 1 hour and 10-20 minutes to scan drives C:, E: and F:, the latter two are my data/work drives, NAV 2010 needs close to 7 hours if compressed files are included and slightly less than 2 hours without compressed files scanning.  The only exclusions are System Volume Information and my Thunderbird POP3 mail boxes.  Below the results:

Scan Stats (including compressed files):
  Scan Time: 23209 seconds
  Scan Options:
  Scan Targets: C:\, E:\, F:\
  Counts:
   Total items scanned: 1,472,228
   - Files & Directories: 1,472,228
   - Registry Entries: 0
   - Processes & Start-up Items: 0
   - Network & Browser Items: 0
   - Other: 0
   - Trusted Files: 1,400
   - Skipped Files: 1

Scan Stats (excluding compressed files):
  Scan Time: 6786 seconds
  Scan Options:
  Scan Targets: C:\, E:\, F:\
  Counts:
   Total items scanned: 90,119
   - Files & Directories: 90,119
   - Registry Entries: 0
   - Processes & Start-up Items: 0
   - Network & Browser Items: 0
   - Other: 0
   - Trusted Files: 1,376
   - Skipped Files: 78

QUESTION: how to improve AV scan time without compromising safety?  Can I exclude certain compressed files folders .. or what's the best route to take?  For example, can I exclude C:\windows\installer which seems to take plenty of time to scan?
