I recently purchased the NMS app for android. I am a bit confused as to how how the anti-theft features work. If phone is lost or stolen, It say to send a text to the device (obviously from another phone). The text message should be for example locate(followed by the password). So I send this text to my phone and now what. The text is received on my phone and what happens next. If it is stolen the thief won't text me back and say I have your phone.somebody please help thanks
If you send the locate command to your missing device, the message will not register on the device. What happens is that any antitheft command when received is received silently by NMS. For locate, the device will send you back a link that you can open in Google maps. This make more sense?
I sent the text command to my phone and the message is displayed just as it was sent i.e locate (password). And the is no link to google maps. I am sending the text from my computer, does this matter or does it have to be from a cell phone? thanks
That would be why. NMS only supports from a phone right now. Sending from a computer modifies the message in a way that NMS is unable to recognize.
Sorry to keep bugging you but do you see this changing inthe near future? If my phone is lost or stolen I would have to use another person's cell phone to send the text from. Also the screen size of a pc would allow a better viewing experience. I recently lost my HTC EVO phone so this is important to me. I can send a text anywhere from any pc but asking someone to use their cell phone to send a text just doesn't make sense. I wish I had know that beforehand or else I would not have purchased the product. I hope yu guys fix this soon. thanks
I guess different people could see this differently (since clearly YOU do! lol) but from my perspective, given the time sensitivity of recovery (i.e., doing this before the person who found or stole your phone TAKES THE BATTERY OUT, or at least before the battery runs dead), I’d much rather be able to turn to my spouse or one of my kids or a colleague or a friend and borrow their phone to send a text, than have to get somewhere where I have access to a computer before I can locate and wipe my phone.
That said, it certainly wouldn’t HURT to have it work from EITHER a phone or a computer–especially since that would open up the ability for folks who ALSO carry a NetBook or a tablet to send the message from THERE. And I do believe Team NMS is working on a way to strip away all the extraneous stuff the computer method loads on there so the locate/wipe/etc. commands can be recognized. The problem as I understand it is that it’s not standardized (and neither obviously are our NMS passwords) which makes the relevant parts difficult to parse…
P.S. Right now, this functionality DOESN’T WORK AT ALL (doesn’t show as available) on most tablets, many of which cannot send or receive text messages. Symantec is also working on a way to address this, which could also solve this problem for you.
I know that some have made it work. You just have to find a service that doesn’t add any fields (like a subject) to the standard SMS format. We are though working on a feature that would be web based as opposed to SMS based, but I cannot give an expected time as to when that will be available. Itl be soon, but that’s about all I can say unfortunately.
