HP releases printer firmware to undo non-HP ink cartridge blocking

HP releases printer firmware to undo non-HP ink cartridge blocking.   HP angered many of its customers in September 2016 when a previously released firmware update for company printers would block non-HP ink cartridges from working.  For more info go here http://www.ghacks.net/2016/10/13/hp-releases-printer-firmware-to-undo-non-hp-ink-cartridge-blocking/

Not dealing with the failure of HP to support "older" printers as used to be done -- but in fact HP does issue driver updates regularly and I get email advisories about them.

But they are Universal Drivers and sometimes the printer will continue to work but some features may not as is the case with the default drivers in Windows itself.

Note that I have great difficulty with HP websites and IE11 but they open perfectly with Firefox.

But on older devices in general no one seems to support them for long ....

Hi Hugh   I have had the same thing with HP products with no driver support after about 3 to 4 years of use so I have switched to Cannon printers. I had a BJC8200 printer that was 12 years old and It would work on windows 8.1. Also I have 3 people  that I know that have upgraded to windows 10 and have HP printer that have no driver support and they don't like it when I have tell them to  buy a new printer.

Who runs HP Printer updates anyway? Certainly not I hope if they showed in Windows Updates like they used to ..... like a 2 yr old driver much earlier than the one I had installed.

HP Automatic Updates usually cause more problems than they cure so I recommend not installing that bit of any of their software that might come with your device.

PS I used to be on Team HP on CompuServe back in the olden days and still do printer support.
