I can buy Norton from Best Buy cheaper than I can renew it. Why?

I can buy Norton from Best Buy cheaper than I can renew it. Why? I went to Best Buy and the sales person was trying to get me to buy a different anti virus. They sell Norton 2012 for $39.95 and Norton wants $74.36. What should I do? I have 3 days left of my free trial.

Go for it, in the UK I only paid £17.00 for NIS 2012.

Regards  Geoff.

The reason so frequently given on the forums is that Symantec cannot undersell or sell the product cheaper the local stores / other resellers.

You may want to shop around.  I got my Norton Internet Security for £17.99 (GBP) or about $28.37 (USD) from Amazon.co.uk.  They shipped in a DVD case instead of the usual box, probably to save cost.  But that doesn't matter since all I want is the subscription code.  Also, some stores offer rebates, etc and you may get the product for free!

Once your product trial have expired, enter the subscription code from the box.  If you enter the code immediately, you WILL lose the existing days of the trial since the subscription code "replaces" the trial.

Hi martyb1 welcome to the norton community. If you are in the US look at your add flyers for this week and the upcoming week end you may find NIS on ad for a good price usually after rebates (office depot ,staples, office max, costco, etc.)

ALF60 is correct ...look for a good price from a reliable source ....beware of certain eBay offers if the price looks really atttractive and pegged at a really low price point !

Some of the very cheap offers are possibly genuine items ....but maybe will be in a foreign release version  format ....worst case scenario..... is that they may be counterfeit !

Reliable outlets are the safest source for a discounted offer .....Golden rule to remember though. If the price is so low that it seems too unbelievable  to be true....Then it usually is:smileywink: !

If you are watching the "pennies " ( like most of us are )  ...and looking for a good price ....just be that extra bit careful.... and you'll be fine !

If you can buy Norton 2012 somewhere else cheaper, Go get it :robottongue: just use the new product key you get, and insert into Norton 2012. And the days will be added.

I went through the same exact thing, and I'll tell you what I did.  I called Customer Service, and asked them why my renewal fee was so much higher than the price of the program, bought new?  I told them if they were going to charge me the 68.00 again, I would cancel my subscription and go to another company for services.  Not only did I get my renewal fee for 20.00 cheaper,  they also extended my current subscrition by an extra month.

Do what I did and it should help.  There was no way in the world I was going to pay that insane renewal price.  Because it's automatically taken out of your account every year (unless you stop  it) you may not even realize that Norton was ripping you off.

This is not entirely acurate.

If you have 20 days remaining and you activate with a new subscription, the new subscription will replace the old one, so you'll only have 366 days (not 386). This is a big difference between a new product code and a renewal code. So, if you plan to use a "new" subscription to replace your old one, make sure you wait until your old one is almost expired before activating the new one.

A little more info:

If you are issued a renewal code, your current product code stays the same. Each product code is treated as an individual subscription. The renewal code is simply a one time use code that adds days to your current subscription. The only way to get renewal codes is through renewing the software through us (at least, from what I'm aware of).

Hope this helps! :smileyhappy:

Hi bree1969,

Assuming you're a part of Automatic Renewal, here's more information on it and how to cancel the Automatic Renewal:

http://www.symantec.com/support/autorenew.html

Email reminders should be sent out a month before the charge to give time to opt-out if you wish. Just wanted to share this with you in case you wanted more info. :smileyhappy:

marty,

As others say, buy the best deal you can get for you .... just watch out especially on line for prices too good to be true since they may be and you find you have an invalid or partially used KEY. Stores that are authorized distributors like you found are OK but don't let them sell you something else!

One Norton place to check out for good prices is on your MyNortonAccount where there is a special offers button and checking this just now I find NIS 2012:

Norton Internet Security 2012

Was $ 69.99
Now $ 49.99  --  1 year protection for up to 3 PCs

That $69.99 is what I see on the Buy Now pages too.

Something to remember when buying a disk and that is that they are not updated so don't use it to install or reinstall unless you want to do a log of updating. If you buy one to get the KEY we can give you a download link for an install file that is the current version available for download.
