I just bought a new laptop running vista home premium. I have plenty of resources, etc. It came with a 90 day trial of Norton Internet Security 2008 already installed on it. The first thing i did was fully upgrade windows, then I fully updated NIS using liveupdates unit i got them all done. It all worked fine. I ran scans and everything worked. Over the last day I’ve been adding on files, documents, games, etc and I just happened to need to adjust the firewall settings for a game. So I double click the icon on my desktop, get a brief loading pic on my cursor, then nothing at all. Ok, so then I check in my taskbar and it is there so i right click and go to open, and nothing again. I go to start - programs - NIS, nothing again. Just the small loading graphic and then nothing at all. I can still right click files and go to “Scan…” and it will scan them but that does not help me get to the menu. I’ve seen others experiencing this problem on some forums but no solutions are ever given except “try to uninstall and reinstall”. The program worked, and it was not downloaded, so there is no issue there. Are there any other suggestions?
I've restarted several times and tried accessing it first thing, still only get the load animation for only a split second and then nothing else. In services, I do not have any that start with "norton" but there are 6 starting with Symantec.
Symantec AppCore Service started
Symantec Core LC started
Symantec Event Manager started
Symantec IS Password validation <blank>
Symantec Lic NetConnect service <blank>
Symantec Settings Manager started
Can you try the steps mentioned in this Launch document. Do not try to run the tool as it will not run on a Vista computer. Try the steps.
Have you solved this as I have the same problem?
Thanks
I know this may not be the answer your looking for but NIS 2009 has been out for a bit now and it 100 times better. Your license for NIS 2008 will be good for NIS 2009. Uninstall NIS 2009 using the Norton Removal Tool and installl NIS 2009.

Please follow the Steps given here before doing what D-man suggested. In this case, you should only use the N.R.T. if you have had probelms un-installing via Add/Remove Programs.
Please confirm:
- if you have used to Norton Removal Tool and re-installed your Norton Internet Security 2008 Product.
I will post back as soon as I try the steps in the launch document. I have not used the NRT.

Hi mglass61,
When you say you fully updated Windows, did that include installing Vista Service Pack1? If you are not sure, you can go to the Windows Update Center and check your update history.
Some of the issues you read about dealt with having NIS 2008 installed and then applying Vista SP1.
Also, could you please provide your version number of NIS 2008. In the main Norton Window go to Help & Support, wait for the interface to load and then click "About". The newest version is: 15.5.0.23.
Thanks.
Regarding my case, I am using Windows XP pro at SP2 so the vista SP doesn't enter into my issue.
I can't supply the NIS2008 version because I can't open the program!! I believe it is up to date because I am running another Norton product (Ghost) and did a live update from within Ghost. It appears to have updated both Ghost and NIS2008 because the NIS icons in the system tray have a green check after the update.
I ran the Symantec Launch tool for XP in the referenced Symantec article. Nothing has changed although the tool reports that it ran successfully.
Any ideas from the Symantec team? I'd love to hear from you!!!

Hi irashapiro,
It appears that you have another thread already created on this topic. Please avoid cross posting the same questions to different threads. Thanks!
The simplest thing you could try is rebooting couple of times. That can work.
Otherwise you could go to
- Start
- search
- services
- in services look for Symantec or Norton
- Is one stopped?
