.NPM backup file cannot be opened as a simple text file. The only way to get back your data is to retore it in anyother Norton product either Norton Internet Security or Norton 360.
If you wanted to get your login details in plain text format you should have used the coExport tool that is available in the c:/program files/Noron360/.../Engine/ and you would have got a file in .CSV format which could be viewed in plain text format.
In your case I understand that you have not used coExport tool to export your Identity Safe data. So the only solution for you is to,
1. Download the public beta build, Norton 360 V5, which is avialable in the following link Public Beta Center.
2. Install in you machine
3. Create a Identity Safe profile
4. Restore the .NPM file you have it with you
5. Run the coExport.exe tool in the Norton Engine folder and get the .CSV file which will have your login information in text format.
Sorry for this little lengthy procedure. But you have no other choice since .NPM is highly secure file due to the encryption. Hope this helps.
This is kind of an insane solution. We supposedly should OWN the information. We should be able to open the information in an unencrypted format so that we can print it out. This is a method for Norton to try and make people use their software to store identity logins and then keep them because almost all of us do not wirte these down in the thought that we can print it out in the future if we ever need it for antoher login computer used or leave Norton. Or at least it should be able to be retrieved in a text file or Excel file format so we can print out or store the data as a backup in another medium and off of the computer's drives in a FORMAT that we can see and print. Again, it supposedly is OUR information. RIght now my subscription is not expired so I cannot get the information in a .csv format. The format I can back it up in is an .NPM file (ie Norton) which I cannot open on antoher computer unless Norton is on it. If that's that case, I still can't get a printout, right? So I have to let the product expire, to, in theory, be able to retrieve the infomraiton ina readable format (I am quite sure Norton will have some other blockign mechanisms when I want to do this step. Most likely now I am going to find another security software that is more user friendly. I have had too many computers crash and burn over the last 15 years and lost too much information to not have both electronic and typically printed backups. Although I can back up this file,now and have, what difference does it make if I can't open and get the information, especially if going somewhere and using a different computer. I have about 140 logins stored right now, if I have to go through each of these manually and type them into an Excel spreadsheet, I can guarantee you I will leave Norton when my subscription expires. There HAS t obe an easier way after spending $80 or whatever every eyar for the last ten plus years.
Anything that makes it easier for you makes it easier for crooks too ....
One uses Identity Safe for security; if you don't want security then one does not have to use it.
But see what the experts have to say since here was given a solution to a specific problem -- I do see that according to Thalir's message (and names in Red are Norton Staff) you can export your ID data file in text (CSV) format

Security is fine. That's why I have a difficult password I've memorized to access the information. Once I access the information I should be able to use it as I please whether on or off the computer. AGAIN it is MY information. They are making it diffcult for the user in the hope you don't leave Norton.
If I am not around and 'someone' unauthorized has access to my computer or steal it in an airport or something, they won't be able to access it, because, like you say, it's encrypted and secure. If there is someone standing over my shoulder with a gun to access the information, I'm gonna give 'em my password anyhow!
You cannot use the .csv format unless your subscription is expired in my version of Norton 360 4.3.0:5.

Yeah you are right. Till N360 Ver 4 you will not be able to use coExport tool till the product expiry. But now the design is changedfor user convenience this constraint on the tool is removed in N360 V5. You will be able to use this once the new version is out.
