I uninstalled it, i alredy know that only one antivirus can run without conflicts at the same time.

Ok but thats not what you first said. Be sure Eset is completely gone. There are files and folders left over I know for sure. What other security products if any are you using?

i’m not running anything else

Strange. Please run the NRT tool Norton Removal Tool

Reboot

Than run some reg cleaner like ccleaner

Reboot

Try to install NAV2009 again

Make sure you have the .NET Framework, Microsoft Visual C++ 2005  and msxml updates installed on your computer:

.Net Framework 1.1: Microsoft Download Site

C++: Microsoft Download Site

MSXML: Microsoft Download Site

I'm unable to install this new versione of norton antivirus and i hasn't find anything on this forum that regard my issue. I have downloaded the trialware versione of Norton Antivirus 2009 and tried to install it on two different PCs with Windows XP Pro SP2 and Windows XP Pro SP3. The same error after running the "NAV09EN.exe" setup file appear:
A problem has occurred that need your attention: This process is unable to continue due to a system service that may not be installed or cannot be started. Please repair your installation of Windows before continuing.

First of all i don't want to reinstall Windows or format because everything work on this 2 pc and so did ESET Smart Security that i have temporarily removed for trying this new nav version so what's the problem? what system service this nav 2009 need that i don't have?!

Actual pc:
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 @ 3.00Ghz

2GB RAM

Windows XP Pro SP3

I have tried all the possible solutions posted above but nothing has changed.

When i tried to install .Net Framework 1.1, C++ and MSXML, every setup said that i had an higher version alredy installed.

I tryed also the Norton Remove Utility (also if i haven't installed ever a symantec product on this installation of Window) without a solution.

According to the message, it appears that your Windows installation is corrupt. After attempting to install Norton Antivirus 2009 I’d look at the installation log for any errors to see if they can provide more insight. Those logs can be found in the All User->Application Data->NortonInstaller->Logs folder. The file should begin with NortonInstall and be followed by the date and time of your installation attempt. Take a look there and see if it provides any more insight and let us know your findings.

This is my last try to install norton antivirus 2009 today, here's the log (i removed some inital strings because of the 20.000 characters limit of this forum):

DeathUman, was the word Error anywhere in the log? Are these the very last lines of the log file? If not, the last lines are usually the most useful.

What i’ve posted are the last lines…

DeathUman, I’m not an expert in this area and I’ve started asking questions of others that know more about this but haven’t received a response yet. The last couple of lines indicate one of the services on your machines (Terminal Services) may not be working properly but I don’t know why that particular service would cause problems for the installation.

Ok i’m not moving. I will wait for a solution if there is one and thank you for the support anyway.

I've spoken to some folks and would like to confirm, as I suspected, that the Terminal Services service is correctly installed and running. Please go look in your Services for a Terminal Services entry and if you find it, report the Status, Startup Type and Log On As values. Your services can be found under Start->Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services.

If you don't find it, you're going to have to get out your Windows CD and have Windows repair itself.

I've tried NAV 2009 in my virtual environment with an original Windows XP SP2 without any services and programs removed and work. Thank you for the help and the solution but i will move over other security solutions that don't need stupid services for running because i have my modified windows xp sp3 (created with the original XP SP1 cd) that need less ram and run faster and no other security solution has ever got such stupid issues and i surely will not pay for this one.

Thank you anyway and now you know that if someone else has this issue is for a modified windows (that can easily be created with a popular software called XPize).

Bye.

DeathUman, I’m glad that we were able to determine the ultimate culprit for the problem. I’m sorry to see you go, though, but wish you well with one of the other products that are out there.

One of the reason you should play around with settings that you have no idea what they do. In the long run you will run into problems such as yours. I have tried tweaking my services and guess what. My pc is not any faster. Tweaking your services does nothing in trying to make your pc faster.

You simply don't know what you are talking about because i don't have any problem from over 2 years with this modified windows and i have fast boot, less than 100mb of ram used and lots of other tweak that make life easier for what i do with my pc. The only problem was with nav 2009 and surely won't change my opinion on this type of windows installation. Certainly you have to know what services and system functions remove from your system and XPize simply tell everything that you have to know about every service or feature that you remove so only if you are using the pc for the first time isn't a suggested choice.

Your pc probably isn't any faster because you have removed wrong feature and not the biggest one and i don't earn anything in saying that my pc is faster.

But, hey, if i have a friend that has a simple windows installation and want a light antivirus that is powerful at the same time i will surely suggest nav 2009 because is without any doubt a great product and nothing compared to the early versions.

(sry for my language if i misspelled something, i'm italian...)

N.I.S. 2009 is light and strong with added must-have features that N.AV. 2009 does not have.
