I am running windows 7 with Norton internet security and with all updates on the Norton product.
For a while now, each time I turn my laptop on, I get an orange exclamation point in the Norton icon down in the taskbar. I have even seen it stay orange for a few minutes after I have already gotten online. When I click the icon, the icon will turn back to the green checkmark. Should I be worried aout this?

Hi,
I suspect that it's there while NIS is busy checking to see if all is well. You would need to be online for it to 'call home' and see if there are any updates that need immediate attention.
If it doesn't change to green after a few minutes then click on the icon and see what error message is displayed. Usually it's something like you need to run a quick scan or live update. The red overlay is the one that means that there is a problem. Still no need to panic just address the problem and turn the overlay green again
We'll be here when you need us. Til then
Stay well and surf safe
panjok2, Norton has just issued a patch to fix a problem with the tray icon, so this may well address your situation. Mine is almost always green, by the time it loads. I also have the Boot Time Protection set to Aggressive, which usually makes the icon load faster.
Thank you very much for your help!!! With all those idiots out there ruining the interenet, I am thankful for people like you and "F4E"!! We need as many people on this side of the fight as we can get! Thanks for your continued effort to make the internet a better place!
I changed my boot time protection to aggressive but something struck me as odd. When I first turned my norton product on to change the boot time setting, I noticed that it had been 7 minutes since the last liveupdate which was no big deal at the time. But after I went in and changed the settings (which took me a little bit of time while I did some reading) Anyways, after I changed the setting to aggresive, I went back to do a liveupdate and it was still at 7 minutes. But I guess it could have ran a scan while I was changing the settings and it was just another 7 minutes later by the time that I looked at it again? But, when I ran the scan, it said a patch was needed. Maybe it means nothing but I thought I would ask the experts again! haha
Hi,
"...it said a patch was needed."
Did you reboot? Although in Win 7 it is not requested, rebooting often does little miracles!
Hi pankok2,
To add to what Rainbow_2 said:
You may not have seen the following, but if you had run LiveUpdate Manually and were watching the results, you would have seen the following:
If you look above the Apply Now you will see in small print (If not applied now, it will be applied later automatically.) what that really means is if you don't Apply Now - it will be applied automatically on the next reboot.
Also,in regards to auto updates - on a busy day Pulse Updates can occur every 5 to 10 minutes. I feel the 7 minutes may have been a coincidence the way you explained it.
OK! Thank you guys for all your help and patients with a small problem! I hope I don't have to ask again but if I do, I will know where to come! You were great! BTW, All is better now!
