Did you download the latest virus definitions for your NIS 2008 ? Try to switch to safe mode ( press F8 when you turn on your computer ) and run again the full scan. If the problems still occur , I recommend you to make a back up of all your important files and restore your computer to the factory setting (means reformat) using the Recovery CD given by your computer manufacturer . After this, reinstall back your NIS 2008 . The problem will be solved.

Hello Talavemr,

I would recommend that you first try this course of action.

Hope someone could help me.

I have tried running a full scan for the first time on my desktop. I bought the 2008 Internet Security CD for my laptop, but this could run for up to three computers. I recently installed and ran a full scan on my desktop. However, the scan hangs on the following file: " C:\Users\Jesus\-\Rubben Studdard Change.zip "

I had no choice but to stop the scan after scanning 303,875 and detecting/resolving 48,593 security risks. My computer has no problems since it is a $2,000 Sony Vaio desktop, with the desktop integrated on the actual monitor. It runs Windows Vista, by the way. It also took a long time to stop the scan because it said "Stopping" but it never did so I had no other choice but to shut down the computer.

Regards,

Jesus

I can see that the scan stalls while trying to scan a compress file. Norton modules will not be able to de compress a file and then scan if there amy issues in decompressing it.In this case I suggest you to disable the scan in compressed files and then try to run a full system scan.

Open Norton product>click on the Norton Internet Security tab>Click on Norton Internet Security options under the settings tab>In the Norton Internet Security window,on the left pane click on  manual scanning> Uncheck the scan in compressed files and active program files.

Now run a full system scan.

Hi Rax, your first link addresses a different issue: "Computer restarts when running a virus scan"

However, your second link seems more relevant to the issue at hand. As Vineeth's post suggests, there may be problem with compressed file scanning, which would probably be the best first step in this case. Thanks!

I think problem is with that compressed file.

Does scan hangs only on that file? If yes, check out if that file is OK.

And about Stopping....

I have seen this problem in almost every version of norton. But in my opinion it is not a problem. Actually when scanning hangs on a particular file and norton does not encounter any problem eg. Windows does not report any error in accessing a file, norton endlessly tries to open that file.

Also, there should be a timeout error while scanning a file, as it happenns when we access a file from network which is not available in a give time. This kind of timeout system may prevent these freezings.

This part of the forum is for Beta releases, atm of NIS 2009

Your question belongs among the released versions of Norton Internet Security

Anyhow, you cud try running the scan in Safe Mode check that you have the latest definitions first.
