I Need Help!

When I posted that notice It was listed under recent history and there's several of them also listed in the tamper prevention drop down option also. The only things showing up in the recent history drop down menu option are those unauthorized access block items and the intrusion prevention items. There's just one other one from a second ago that says tracking cookies and they were removed.

Hi you could also post a screenshot of Qurantine

Hi lets go  back

I don`t think its Norton please install soundcard again do you have other security suites/programs???

OK Lets leave Norton out of it for the moment anyway ...

Some Questions (and there's a reason for them)

Is the Mute button pressed to ON? If so press it to OFF. If this doesn't give your sound back reboot and toggle (On/OFF/ON/OFF a few times so that it ends up OFF)

Do you have a headphone or anything plugged into the audio socket on the laptop? If yes unplug it and reboot the computer.

Download this audio driver file for your Computer with VISTA and install it -:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-62860-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&os=2093&product=1817074&sw_lang

Download and SAVE it; not RUN, where you can find it. When downloaded Right Mouse Click on it and select Run as Administrator and install the file; reboot and see if the sound is back.

The reason for the initial questions is that an earlier fix included this:

Adds support for Microsoft Windows Vista Operating Systems (32-bit).
Fixes
- Fixes issue where the Mute button status may not be changed if the notebook is restarted (rebooted) with the Mute status set to "On." - Fixes issue where an error message pops up when installing this driver over the Operating System "In-Box" driver. - Fixes issue where there is no audio output from the speaker if the notebook is rebooted/suspended with the earphone plugged in.

The file I linked to is the latest release (although it's back in 2008) and should include all the earlier releases.

Hope that helps

Sorry not to find this sooner but you may like at least to try the Microsoft FixIt on this HP web page on troubleshooting Sound problems in VISTA .....

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00833257&tmp_task=solveCategory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&softwareitem=ob-62860-1&os=2093&product=1817074&sw_lang=

You may like to try that robot before my list although checking the mute button would be the first anyway!

:smileyhappy:

The Mute function is not on. If I click on the little sound speaker icon with the red X it says there are no sound devices. Nothing is plugged in (headphones etc.) I have updated my soundcard and saved it (instead of running it right away) Doing this fixes the problem even when I restart it the sound will work fine. The only time the sound stops working (it goes back to saying that there are no sound devices) is after I do any kind of scan. Norton is the only antivirus program I currently have installed. These are the reasonsI feel that the issue may be related.

Thank you for your input Hugh. I thought that was the initial problem and I tried all of those steps before coming here. I've tried all of the windows troubleshooting for sound issues including the FixIt tool and stil no solutions. Next, I turned to HP and they showed me the same steps you gave me to update my sound card, which I did and it works ok until I do another scan. Once I do a scan the sound is gone again it goes back to showing the speaker icon with a red X and I have to keep repeating all of the update steps everytime I restart my computer. When I talked to HP they told me the only thing they could figure was that it might be related to this program but I still haven't found the correct solution :(

Frequently my sound icon in the taskbar has  a red X on it as well.  There could be a driver conflict with Norton or any other ptogram, really.  When the red X is visible, I just click on the icon and then click on the volume bar that pops up.  That seems to re-enable it again.  Nuisance value but way too hard to track the conflicting driver.

OK Latasha -- I'm glad you had been there already. I find HP/COMPAQ support is good (like here <g>) but it 's so easy for something to fall through the gaps.

<<  If I click on the little sound speaker icon with the red X it says there are no sound devices. >>

Have you looked in Device Manager before the audio stops working and seen if there are any flags on audio -- one of the troubleshootings stops on the HP site shows where it is in the tree. I go to Device Manager using WINKEY + Pause and then Hardware TAB and click on Device Manager button.

I wonder if it is worth listing the files it shows there [ Double click on the entry for Sound device then Driver / Driver Details ]

Then running a scan that breaks the audio and checking that file list again.

That might give a clue to the file that Norton is thinking is malware and it could be submitted for testing.

But why is there no reference to this in Recent History? Since it is not being quarantined I wonder if there is any other action

Norton can be taking?

One other thing I notice from reading back through the thread:

<<  When I do the Windows + pause key it says I have

Windows Vista  Home Premium

2.0 windows experience index

AMD Turion (tm) 64 X2 TL - 58 1.90 Ghz

32-bit  Operating System  >>

That would seem to indicate that you have not applied any of the Service Packs to update VISTA from its original release state! Can this be so?  Is there no reference to Service Pack

How is your Windows Update set?

NOTE:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935791

Support for Windows Vista without any service packs installed ended on April 13, 2010. To continue receiving security updates for Windows, make sure you're running Windows Vista with Service Pack 2 (SP2). For more information, refer to this Microsoft web page:  Support is ending for some versions of Windows

I'm grasping for some explanation ......

Delphinium,

I wish I could just click on it and it would bring up my sound bar (i've seen it do that before-when it's working and I put it on mute I could just click it to turn it back on) but It doesn't allow me to.  I can't click on it at all...I can right-click but it just says there are no sound devices and everything is greyed out so I can't click on anything there either. The little red x doesn't look like the normal red x you would get if you put your sound on mute it looks slightly different, i don't know why. Ok, well normally when on mute it has a red circle with a line through it saying it's muted this icon is actually a red x not the circle with the slash.

 Hugh,

It seems like you've put a lot of time into helping me and I appreciate that.  Ok starting from the beginning of your message...

HP's website seems thourough but when I tried calling customer support to actually talk to someone they wouldn't help me at all because my pc is out of warranty! That was frustrating, and when I was chatting with their online support thats when they told me to do the BIOS update and download that sound driver or card thing.

I tried looking at the device manager and I didn't see any yellow flags or any flags but  i'm not sure if I checked that hardware tab so I will double check that when I get home.

As for the service packs, i'm not sure what those are or how to get them and also i'm not sure about how my windows update is set...i'm really not all that computer literate, unfortunately. Hopefully you might be able to provide a little more help for me!

When I get home this evening I will try to visit the sites you linked and keep you updated. Thank you again for your input.

Hi windows Vista Service Pack is available via windows update!

You should have service pack 2

If you have Service pack 1 then you should download using windows update or download from here

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=a4dd31d5-f907-4406-9012-a5c3199ea2b3&displaylang=en

to find out what service pack you currently have

press windows key + pause

Your version will be written on top

below Copyright microsoft below that current service pack installed

If you don`t see anything then

chance are you don`t have a service pack at all

Here's one more thing from the HP Website that you should try --

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-57820-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&sw_lang=&product=1817074&os=2093

HP Quick Launch Buttons Description:

This package contains software that enables customers to program the Quick Launch Buttons on the keyboard and the external Easy Access Buttons Keyboard for the supported notebook models and operating systems. This application enables menu control of various buttons such as volume, internal/external display, and mute on/off.

Laptops are particularly sensitive to these extra features they have and so something may have upset the software they use.

If you were in the Device Manager then forget the Hardware TAB since that is the route to Device Manager that I normally use but there are other ways of getting there.

Again when you go to install that button software, right mouse click on the downloaded file and select Run as Administrator.

Lets leave the Service Pack 2 until you've dealt with this one -- it should be mentioned on that screen where you quoted that you had VISTA ..... 32 bit

Windows Vista  Home Premium

2.0 windows experience index

AMD Turion (tm) 64 X2 TL - 58 1.90 Ghz

32-bit  Operating System  >>

I don't have VISTA available easily to look at but here's what I get with putting System Information into the Search box on the START button in WIndows 7 and selecting System Information on the list of references it puts up -- I think VISTA works that way too?

capture_03142011_154656.jpg

Ok I double checked the Device Mgr and I just went to it a different way from what you showed me but anyway, should I try this package before I do those others you listed before?

Also Hugh, how can send you a screenshot of the stuff i'm looking at? I tried the CTRL+PRT SC that didn't work so I tried ALT+PRT SC still nothing and also just PRT SC but it's not doing anything or showing up if I try to paste it in word or paint. I think i'm probably doing that wrong!

Press Alt+print screen key

it wil take a screenshot of the window you are using right now!

paste it in paint only i.e press  ctrl+v in paint then save it in anyplace you like!

to upload here press the small tree icon and you are done

Thanks Midou, I tried ALT+PRT SC just now then went to paint and pressed CTRL+V to paste....didn't do anything.

Ok.

#1 I tried downloading the HP Quicklaunch. As I was downloading it I realized that this is the program that pops up everytime I start my computer but it always says

"HP QUICKLAUNCH HAS STOPPED WORKING A PROBLEM HAS CAUSED THE PROGRAM TO STOP WORKING CORRECTLY WINDOWS WILL CLOSE THE PROGRAM AND NOTIFY YOU IF A SOLUTION IS AVAILABLE".

After realizing that I tried downloading it anyway and it restarted my computer, but...right when it started up again that same message appeared. So at this point that program appears to be installed but is not working properly.

#2 I typed in System Information into the start menu and it says I have Version 6.0.6000 BUILD 6000 and it's Microsoft Windows Vista Premium.

I don't know what I should do next. :/
