I need lots of hel[

First of all, I am attempting to get help here because I can't seem to get it anywhere else. Lance, the virtual tech dude, is worthless. For the record, I am tech illiterate so be kind. :smileysad:

My computer was infected with W32/Blaster.worm through Firefox yesterday. I bought a copy of NIS 2011 at Wallyworld and tried to install it, but the CD wouldn't work. Thinking that I had a defective CD and desperate to get rid of this virus, I connected to the internet using Explorer and purchased NIS that way ($100 so far! yay!).

The NIS download didn't touch the problem.

Then I had the bright idea to try the disc that I had purchased on my other laptop and it worked on that one....sort of. It would appear that there is something wrong with the disc, but I was given the option to download a version that worked just fine. SO! Now I have 4 unused applications of NIS (yay again!).

Anyway....I felt that the disc version did a better job at scanning, detecting and fixing potential problems on my other laptop so I wanted to install that version onto my infected computer, but can't figure out how to since the disc drive isn't functioning.

My question for this forum is, HOW DO I USE MY DISC VERSION WITHOUT USING THE DISC?

When I log into my Norton account the disc version isn't showing up as having been purchased.

Also, if anyone knows how to get rid of this friggin' virus I have 4 NIS uses that you can have. :smileyhappy:

the links are suggested by delph!!

They will give help you to get rid of the threat in a step by step manner

these are pretty good malware Removal Forums

Regsiter in anyone forum

bleeping has very long wait

mention the virus you are affected with

in the topic

Installing a antivirus software in an already infected system is not a good idea.

the virus may interfere in the installation process

your dics may be fine but the virus I think is somehow preventing an install

Have you tried downloading the setup(trial version)

http://www.symantec.com/redirects/norton/norton_com/nis11/

Mostly the setup will be delted or the process terminated during attempts to install

For eg when i was hit by sality/silly FDC worm

they delted setups of 2 antivirus software that I had terminated my antivirus

deleted other applications like hijackthis or prevented them to start!! :smileysad:

I cant gurantee but one of my friends said the windows MRt or a microsoft update can get rid of the worm completely

Press windows key + R ,Type mrt.exe hit enter

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/826955

this page has a few patches but don`t install or run

Please don`t

run MRT or Dwonload patches

wiat until other / quads gets here he may able to tell if the mrt / patches are of any use at all

don`t use the infected computer to login into yahoo / banking sites

Thank you! I'll look into these options.

For the record, I downloaded NIS successfully, but it didn't do anything to fix the virus.

Ugh! I'm not making myself clear.

I'll just say it this way. I purchased NIS from Wallyworld and installed it onto one of my laptops. I want to install it on my other laptop, but the disc drive doesn't work. How do I install NIS onto my laptop that has the broken disc drive? Yes, I have two uses available.

Hi again,

how do you know the disc drive does not work?

As I already said virus can prevent the norton disc from Autorun also prevent boot from disc during start up!(system boot)

the downloaded copy of Norton is more up to date

you can use a thumb drive / pendrive to copy it from the laptop

the virus present in your system might not allow you to install Norton

Looks like Symantec has a removal tool

http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2003-081119-5051-99

Read the steps very carefully

Proceed at own risk

symantec tools don`t usually harm crucial/damage/remove

Crucial system files(from my experience)

but you never know what can happen!

I still suggest you move to those forums and regsiter they are good for a lot of things including for virus removal.

wait for Quads

I don`t know if he is goin to remove the threat for you but will definitely give

Extremely useful advice on whether to use the removal tool or not!

Which version of windows do you use??

You can find my

right click my computer properties

"or"

hit window key+ pause

dgg,

Just dealing with the money side of things....

I don't know "WallyWorld" but assuming"

you are in the USA and this is Wal-Mart as I understand it you have bought a retail package of NIS on a CD and tried installing that from the CD and would have used it's KEY if you had gotten to the Activate point but didn't get that far or created a MyNortonAccount to save it.

you then went on line to the Norton Store and bought a copy of NIS which you have been able to download and save on a computer but have not succeeded in installing and have not used that KEY or created a MyNortonAccount to save it.

you paid more for one of those two purchases -- I'd guess for the online download from Norton since retailers often have discounts and rebates

Then you should stick with using the cheaper KEY but use the downloaded copy to install.

All of which is a lead up to the fact that Norton have a 60 day satisfacteion warranty under which they will refund your purchase price whether from them or from on retail store so you can get refunded your purchase of the more expensive one which I'll assume is the Norton on line purchase.

If any of those assumptions are wrong then please correct them.

But concentrate first on cleaning up the infected computer and the safest way is as indicated by BanMidou in this message since those are safe websites that are FREE and which have an excellent reputation for getting malware off your machine -- bleepingcomputer does tend to be very busy and so may be the slowest to be able to deal with your problem.

All thse sites insist for valid reasons that you do not at the same time try any instructions but theirs for your specific problem and don't try a solution that worked for other people.

Then when your machine is infection free I suggest you come back here and get the instructions on how best to install NIS cleanly -- there ae some steps you need to take to specially clean up after something goes wrong but we'll help you with those.

Also don't use the CD you purchased from WallyWorld even if you are going to use the KEY (is it for one PC or 3 PCs?) since the CD versions are the original version as released -- last fall since it is the 2011 version you say. We can give you a URL to a Norton site where you can download and save on your computer a one piece installation file that I've found runs more smoothly when you save it than if you try to upgrade or update from the website.

Would you also please tell us what version of Windows you are using on the infected computer including the service packs and whether it is 32 bit or 64 bit (you can see that if you press the WINNKEY and Pause keys at the same time and look on the System Information TAB that comes up.

When you come back we can also tell you how to contact Customer Support on line to get your purchase money refunded for the purchase you don't want to keep.

But get the machine clean first ....

What program is notifing you that you are infected with the "W32/Blaster.worm"??  That you then go and buy Norton to install.

A lot of rogues (FakeAV's) use famous old Malware names in false detections for starters.

Norton isn't the only AV out there, people. For you, I would try Emsisoft. Download the 3-day trial and update (about 200MB), let it run deep scan (an hour-plus), and one of the two scanners will pick up more than just your virus (likely Ikarus, which picked up two Trojans on mine that Norton ignored). They'll be quarantined which means disabled.

However Norton consistently performs near the top of the list.

The most useful thing that dgg could do would be to answer Quads' question about what program is reporting the W32.Blaster worm.  This is obviously a fake alert and knowing which rogue AV is responsible should point us in the right direction to remedy the problem.  Doing anything else doesn't really address the problem in the most direct and effective way.

Emisoft Antimalware has a real time component to!

I think!

Thats gonna cause problems

Besides

The blaster tool all are useless suggested in  my post

as it looks like he does have a rogue

From what I can see he does not have any antivirus in him computer

Unless MRT did a scan and displayed the results!

I know Norton not the only security program out there,  I also know a long list of programs, including advanced ones. But you are forgetting one thing.

This is the Norton Forums, for people who have Norton products,  Maybe you forgot that??

My question of what is telling the user that they are infected with W32/Blaster Worm, is because for one the user can't install Norton, so Norton is not giving the popup, so what is.

Also the other symptom of the user can't install Norton on the machine giving the warning.   Norton install file is an .exe file.

One  reason I can remove every piece of Malware I have tested (infected my PC with) is that I don't just chuck every program at it, I also know which programs would conflict .

Just like what has happened here with Avenger way back stuck in a PC restart loop, due to the user had Spyware Doctor also installed. Which was causing the problem.
