I was led to a threat removal site: vap2yyz1.lijit.com. Is this a good or bad one?

I hesitated to use this site as the words were applied in a somewhat foreign way.

I would be very leery of any "threat removal" website.  Many of these are Trojans in and of themselves.  I did scan this one on Virus Total just now, and it didn't find anything.  However, I wouldn't consider that to be the final word.  Something about the name combined with the fact that it has an obscure and poorly designed name to make me think it likely is some type of malware in and of itself.  Use the scans that are provided by Norton and/or other antivirus scans.  You can use Malwarebytes as well, that is legitimate.  However, other than that, I would avoid online 'scans'.  Believe it or not, many hackers will attempt to convince their victims that their 'software' is removing malware when they ARE THE MALWARE.

That is very true and very good examples would be something "spyware stormer" and the notorious "lop.com"

Sorry if I misunderstood your intention.

It's a problem on what I call blog or linear web forums where there is nothing to indicate who is replying to which message!

I'm used to one of the original online forums, CompuServe, where messages are addresses automatically and visibly to the message on which you click the Reply button and also contain an active link in the form of message numbers for your reply and the message to which you are replying. And you can change the address if you need to. It's really neat and helpful.

That's why here I try to remember to add a name salutation at least, or a quote from the message I'm replying to.

Definitely the ones in the thread that Rainbow2 mentioned are safe and can be quite effective.  In fact, many friends of mine swear by MalwareBytes as an effective way to remove malware.  I was simply saying that an unfamiliar 'threat removal website', such as the one the OP mentioned, could potentially contain a Trojan.

is very true and can't be said often enough but the short list here in this forum that Rainbow2 gave (a little difficult to see but the word here is an active link to this thread:

https://community.norton.com/en/forums/malware-removal-forum-recommendations

Every one of those groups has been checked and rechecked by many sources and some even have on their staff people who are active in the Norton Forum and well know to us as "Gurus".

So they are safe to go to and have an excellent record for solving problems if the user follows every instruction explicitly and doesn't take any shortcuts. Also the less the user has attempted to fix anything themselves the better the chance of success by these experts.

So thanks for the warning but Rainbow2's is safe and valid.
