Identity Safe Function Not Working

Origanlly posted this in Norton 360 forum and guess that was wrong, so trying again here to see if I can get an answer or solution to why identity safe is not working.

When I sign in with identity safe, none of my logins pop up and I have to manually enter each one. Have tried backing up my login data and than logging in with an incorrect code and resetting everything. The logins are luckily "still" there, but I am unable to get the feature to work.

Settings:  prompt when first log in and log out if inactive for 30 miutes

Still have to manually enter all information.

What else can do to resolve this issue. Irritating, when loggin in to numerous sites to keep up with my online businesses and this function wont work.

NIS 2011
Version is 18.6.0.29
Operating System IE 7

Many thanks,

Charlie

Hi fyidenmark,

Can you try following options,

1.Open "Manage Logins" UI and check whether "Auto-Fill when I visit this page" option is selected for all the logins you have saved.
2.Can you also check under "Settings"->"Websettings"-> "Identity Safe Options" that "Securelly collect my logins and offer to fill in those logins when I revisit those pages" option is CHECKED under it
3.What is the size of the backup file before resetting identity safe?
4.If you Reset identity safe, you will lose all the information you stored, so have you restored the backed up data after resetting identity safe?

Thanks,

Senthil

Hi Senthil,

All those options are set and I have already backed up the files and reloaded them. File size was 3.05 MB.

Still having the problem.

HI fyidenmark,

Welcome to the Norton Community.

When you navigate to a page in which you have a login stored, are you able to select the login by going to the Identity Safe menu on the toolbar of your browser and select the appropriate login from the Available Logins for this page?

Also, I see you are using IE 7 as your browser. I don't know if this is part of the problem but I think it is possible. Even though technically NIS does show IE 6 or higher for system requirements, I'm wondering if there might be some OS / browser version interaction going on with NIS - hard to say. Is there a reason why you are still using IE 7?

You should upgrade to IE 9 if you are using Windows Vista SP 2 or Windows 7, or IE 8 if you are on XP. Which version of Windows and SP are you using by the way?

You can try going to NIS Settings > Web Settings > Identity Safe and set to OFF. Then save changes and turn back ON / save changes and see if this makes a difference.

However, I would highly recommend upgrading IE.

Please let us know how it goes.

Best wishes.

Allen

Hi,

Upgraded IE9, everything is up to date, tried turing IS off and than back on, but still nothing. This worked fine a few days ago and did no changes to Norton, so it seems as if the program has a bug.

As for

"When you navigate to a page in which you have a login stored, are you able to select the login by going to the Identity Safe menu on the toolbar of your browser and select the appropriate login from the Available Logins for this page?",

Not realy sure what that is. I can go to the manage logins and find the login information, but I do  not see anything that lets me select the login. I can only copy and paste the information.

Beginning to feel like a fool for not being able to figure this out.

Additional requested info:

IE 9 Version 9.0.8112.16421
Windows Vista 6.0 Service Pack 2

SAME EXACT story with my 2011 NIS -- did everything you were told to do with 360 and as you found, NONE of the suggestions worked at all.

This leads me to think that one of the updates had a bug in it -- I wonder how prevalent this issue is.

While it is not the end of the world, it is VERY annoying.

I am about ready to uninstall NIS and reinstall it -- not sure how to save all of my gazillion logins since I would hate to have to reinstall them one at a time -- YIKES!!!!

Anyone have any ideas as to how to save the logins so that NIS or 360 can be uninstalled and reinstalled?

mrspurg

I already backed my files up into an .NPM file, which I used to reinstall my logins. I have it on a disk, so I should be able to reinstall them. Let me know if you try it and it works.

Not sure I want to try it and lose all my logins.

Why does Norton not fix this problem.( if it is due to an update - I never made any changes before this happened)

HI Charlie,

If you are on IE 9, no problem there then. Your opening post mentioned IE 7. :smileywink:

Please see image below for being able to select the login from the menu to see if that works.

Best wishes.

Hi mrspurg,

You don't need to redo the logins. You can back up your ID safe data by going to Settings > Web Settings > Identity Safe > Backup Identity Safe Data. Save the file to a convenient location and set a password if desired (recommended for security). Once NIS is reinstalled (or at any other time) you would simply need to do the initial setup of ID safe and then select Restore Identity Safe Data from the same settings page where you performed the backup.

This will reimport your login and all other ID safe information back into the program.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.

Hi Charlie,

Something obviously happened with your ID safe which led to this problem but this is not a widespread problem which can just be fixed.

I have all updates on 3 different computers and have not had any problems and I don't see a many other reports of this except for this thread.

mrspurg, before trying to uninstall and reinstall NIS you can do a backup of ID safe as I outlined earlier. Then from the Web Settings page, log out of ID safe then try to log back in and enter your password wrong twice in a row. This will allow you to initialize ID safe again. You can then restore your ID safe backup as explained before and see if this corrects the problem.

Charlie, it looks like you have already tried the above. Correct?

If this does not work, then we may need to uninstall and reinstall NIS. Please let us know how you progress and we can help you all with this part.

Also, by any chance did either of you select the option to "Don't ask me again" when NIS prompted you with logins for any websites?

Just to clarify, does this problem happen with all websites or only some of them?

Please do let us know how it goes.

Best wishes.

Allen

Hi fyidenmark,

can you try the following work around and please answer some of the questions so that we can help you out.

Please run Live Update until there are no new updates, if you have done it already well and good.

1. Make sure you have checked the option - "Display my logins each time I visit a page with multiple Logins" as well in Settings -> Web Settings -> Identity Safe -> Identity Safe Options in case if you're having multiple logins for same login page.

2. make sure "Norton Toolbar" and "Symantec NCO BHO" are enabled in IE -> Tools -> manage Add-ons

3. make sure your toolbar is checked and visible (please see the screenshot below)

4. Are you running IE9 In "InPrivate" browsing mode?, if so toolbars and extensions will be disbaled. If you wanted to run in InPrivate Mode of IE then please uncheck the option  "Disable toolbars and extensions when InPrivate Browsing starts" from IE -> Tools -> Internet Options -> privacy Tab -> "InPrivate Section"

5. Do you see the same issue on Firefox Brwoser 3.6.18 or 4.0.1 or 5.0 versions? if suppose you're using it.

6. since you have said that you're using the settings "30minutes timout" for identity safe, can you please change the settings to default by clicking "Default All" in Settings -> Web Settings -> Identity Safe -> Identity Safe Password & security

Success at last. I do know which of the workarounds did the trick, but I seem to have the function working again. It may have been the "Symantec NCO BHO" since it seemed to be the only thing that was not checked and the default option on the Identity Safe Password.

P.S. Should the Sym, Intrusion Prevention button also be checked in the IE toolbars add on option?

Thank everyone for their assistance, much appreciated .. can now get back to doing some work again.

Charlie

Hi Charlie,

Glad to see your issue is resolved!!

Of course, 30 minutes timeout option should work as expected and i'm using it right now.

Q: Should the Sym, Intrusion Prevention button also be checked in the IE toolbars add on option?

And yes, please enable the "Symantec Intrusion Prevention" add on to protect you from any browser based vulnerablities.

Hope this answers your question.
