I have just upgraded from nis 2010 to 2011 and was unable to login to identity safe because of the password error. I reset the password but have now lost all my data. I have a backup NPM file from nis 2010 but I am unable to restore this again due to password error. How can I restore this file.
Hi,
please try this method:

Sorry about the troubles with Identity Safe! I also apologize for not posting in this thread sooner. I was working with AllenM to help understand this issue better and to look for solutions.
The problems with Identity Safe can be fixed by updating to Norton Internet Security 18.5.
Here are the instructions:
1) Download Norton Internet Security 18.5 here.
2) Launch the installer and select I Agree and Install.
The installer will update you to 18.5. You will need to reboot. After you boot back up, login to Identity Safe.
Norton Internet Security 18.5 is currently only available through the above download link. We will be pushing our 18.5 through LiveUpdate soon, as well as updating the Norton Update Center.
Please let us know if this helps!
Let us know what happens.

Hi johnob,
Just wanted to add one note to what Papauz said. I was also affected by this problem a while back and upgrading to NIS version 18.5 does resolve the problem.
I'm happy to see that you have your ID safe data backed up. This is always a good idea after you've added new logins. Though this kind of problem with NIS is very rare (this is the only time I can ever recall a problem like this), when it comes to something as critical as login information you should always keep it backed up.
Best wishes and please let us know how it goes.

i have updated to the latest version 18.5 as described but still can not restore the data using my new or old password.
Hi johnob,
Are you unable to restore from the .NPM backup because it is password protected and the program no longer recognizes the password? When you reset the password, did you pick a new one? If so, try changing the password to the previous one you had and see if you are then allowed access to the .NPM file.
Hi johnob,
Are you sure the backup NPM file you had from 2010 had used the same password as you normally use to log into ID safe?
The password for the backup is completely seperate from your normal ID safe password so don't assume it would automatically be the same as the password you normally log in with.
You would have had to actually set the password when you made the backup itself. E.g., the backup NPM file could even have been set with NO password and NIS would allow this.
Please let us know how it goes.
Best wishes.
Allen
Hi, Thanks for all the help, I have managed to restore the backup now.
I uninstalled 2011 and reinstalled 2010 then I installed ver 18.5 and restored the data using my password.
I hope Symantec get things right for next year or I for one will be switching to something else, this is the third time I have had trouble upgrading to the new release and I have had enough.
Once again many thanks for the help.
Hi johnob,
Thanks very much for the update. For others who experienced this problem with not being able to log into ID safe (myself included in that list), simply upgrading to 18.5 resolved the problem.
I don't know why this did not work for you and you had to go back to 2010 and back again to 2011, but I am very happy that you were able to get this working again.
Best wishes.
Allen
