IE 9 32-bit does not work After Microsoft Updates - Norton Internet Security (20.2.1.22)

UPDATE

Overnight my system installed the latest Micosoft Updates, including the Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for X64-based Systems.  This morning the 32-bit version of IE9 didn't work again.  The 64-bit version of IE9 did work.  When I checked available updates, I saw IE10 was available.  I installed IE10 and the problem is gone.  I also noticed that there is no 64-bit version of IE10.

I always felt this was a conflict between NIS and something in the Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for X64-based Systems update.  The fact the IE10 works just fine with NIS solves my problem although it doesn't answer the question of what caused the problem to begin with or what would have fixed the problem.

I have a similar, but not the same issue with IE9 32-bit and NIS. I only see an issue with Apple’s iCloud.com website, so far.

Systems: two Dell Desktops, one Dell Laptop; Windows 7 Home Premium and Pro.

I’m a long time NIS user and recently started using iCloud.com when I purchased an iPad and enabled iCloud’s PhotoStream, Calendars, Contacts, Notes, etc. I usually don’t log into the iCloud website, but I noticed in February that I could only sporadically log in and access was excruciatingly slow. However, even if I could log in; Contacts, Calendars, etc. wouldn’t launch and eventually an error message would appear stating “Can’t Load XXXXX; There was a problem loading the Application”. XXXXX named the actual application I was trying to launch.

The result was the same on all three Windows 7 systems (either NIS 20.2.1.22 or 20.3.0.36). At first I thought this was due to the recent Microsoft updates; so as a test I restored the Laptop to a state prior to the updates; no change. I started reading the Apple Discussion groups and discovered similar problems in November/December 2012 and they suggested using Apple’s Safari. So, I downloaded Safari and it worked flawlessly with iCloud.com. Then, to try other troubleshooting tools, I tried IE9 64-bit and it, too, worked flawlessly with iCloud.com. Then, since Safari and IE9 64-bit don’t incorporate Norton Internet Security, I decided to temporarily disable "Browser Protection" in the “Advanced, Settings, Web” settings in the NIS panel. Amazingly, this allowed the 32 Bit version of IE 9 to access and work flawlessly with iCloud.

I installed the latest Microsoft updates (3/12/2013) and the issues are still the same.

So, somewhere between Apple, Microsoft, and Norton Internet Security there seems to be an issue when trying to access and use iCloud.com.

Thanks for the information about IE10! I saw the update yesterday and was waiting for some feedback. I will test it on my Laptop before putting it on our Desktop computers. It will be interesting to see if iCloud.com works with IE10; the 32-bit version of IE9 certainly isn't for me and lots of folks that have NIS and possibly other security programs!!!!!!!

Hi,

IE 10 runs fine with NIS 20.3.0.36 but NOT with NIS 2012.

Had to upgrade to NIS 2013 because the identity protection module in NIS 2012 toolbar had some issues with IE10.

See topic:  http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/NIS-2012-Identity-Protection-module-and-IE10/m-p/925717#M233992

I've not checked this but someone has posted that there are no longer separate 32 bit and 64 bit versions with IE10 but that you can toggle between them within the application itself.

I've not had any opportunity to check this since my usual Windows 7 is still 32 bit and I would not be able to toggle but in your 64 bit environment you might look in say Tools for a choice?

Do let us know what you find.

Hi Hugh,

I had to dig for Enhanced Protection Mode - It's located in Tools > Advanced.  It appears to be off by default in my W7 machines, but here's a blog entry that might offer some insight - http://blogs.msdn.com/b/ie/archive/2012/03/14/enhanced-protected-mode.aspx

Dave

Thanks Dave ...

The interesting bit is at the end.

Does all this tie in with only seeing one IE entry in All Programs instead of seeing 32 bit and 64 vit versions of IE?

I'm not in a position to check.

I installed IE10 on my Laptop today and the installation removes both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of IE9. The completed installation only shows one version of IE10 and it isn't classified as either 32-bit or 64-bit; but when you look at managed Add-ons, there is a new column titled Architecture an it lists Add-on programs as being "32-bit" or "32-bit and 64-bit". I couldn't find any method of making IE10 32-bit or 64-bit, but the Architecture information for the Add-ons makes it look like it can work in either configuration depending on what Add-on's need to be run.

I did discover with IE10 that I could access iCloud.com without disabling NIS Browser Protection and use the website's Apps. Previously, I had to use Safari or the 64-bit version of IE9 or the 32-bit version of IE9 with NIS Browser Protection disabled.

Hugh,

I checked About Internet Explorer while Enhanced Protection Mode was enabled and it shows exactly the same as without EPM enabled.

IE 10.PNG

Note it doesn't show 64-Bit.  Also note is says RTM, but I downloaded IE 10 from Windows Update and it was classed as an Important Update.

I also only have one IE in All Programs now too.

On 64 bit systems, the core of the browser is a 64-bit process, always. It spawns 32 bit processes for the content (tabs), which also allows the add-ons to function, Norton toolbar included. If you enable EPM, the 64-bit core process spawns 64-bit content processes, and only 64-bit addons work, e. g. Flash and Silverlight.

I confirm what Krusty13 told, IE10 was offered as en optional d/l for Win7 comps with SP1. Unfortunately I trusted MS: “...faster, easier and safer than ever”. As far as I can see, the update was published 12.03.2013.

The result of the upgrade: My virtual keyboard (Sticky Password) did not work anymore. I learned what TomiRed already has written, IE10 runs in a mixed 32/64 bit mode. The Task Manager lists two processes, 'iexplore.exe' and 'iexplore.exe *32'. (I cannot recall how the Norton Toolbar behaved.)

If you accidentally have installed IE10 and want to revert to IE9, this might be helpful:

Previously I have followed MS's instructions: Control Panel > Programs and Features > Task pane > Turn Windows features on or off > Internet Explorer 10 > Warning message > Confirm. That route did not work this time, but I had success with this method:

Open Windows Update > Show update log > Installed Updates (in the heading) > Scroll down to IE10 > Right-click > Uninstall > Reboot. IE9 is back!

If you need a fresh setup file, find your version at http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/internet-explorer/downloads/ie-9/worldwide-languages.

Thanks everyone for adding to the knowledge base ....
