IE+Norton Accelerator Enable?

So yesterday, December 25th around 8am at earliest I had a proper working Internet Explorer; meaning I had the ability to:

Highlight a word on a webpage and an arrow would pop up and I could use it to "norton safe search" the web

Obviously I dont have that ability anymore as I've reset IE to manufacturer defaults.

Where did it go? Did I lose it forever?

Lets say hypothetically speaking on January 1st I was able to use Microsoft and download the Norton Safe Search Accelerator to my computer.  So since January I've never resetted IE to factory settings.....Lets see October 1st Microsoft no longer has it to download...now as I'm writing this sentence it makes me think that Norton would be the one to take it down right?  Perhaps phasing out or no longer supporting Internet Explorer as a web browser?

Obviously then, in theory if I had it downloaded prior to October 1st I still could've used it all til December 25th?

Well at any rate I hope someone here knows what I'm talking about.  Perhaps a picture on what I'm referring to (without the Norton Safe Search feature of course)???

I'd really like it back! Thanks!

Hi itolman,

Let me ask for some clarification on what you were doing in regards to highlighting a word, having the arrow popup and then how you used "Norton safe search" ?  I got the highlight word, arrow pops up - did you then right click and select Norton safe Search from the drop down?  Something similar to the following?

Search with Norton safe Search.PNG

Dependent on which version of IE you are using, when you reset settings in IE it also changes your search provider.  For example IE 10 changes it to Bing.  Regardless, in order to get it back to Norton Safe Search you can follow the instructions in the following link:

http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/how-to/software/3447570/change-default-search-engine-in-ie/

I have just changed mine from Google to Norton Safe Search and obtained the above option while my previous option is shown below as my default search engine had been Google.

Search with google.PNG

I hope this helps and is what you are encountering.

yank is it??

THANK YOU! You do understand what I was trying to ask.

However....when I reset my IE 9; the only search provider was Bing

If I do a search for "more providers" a huge list of options appears...in that search bar if I type Norton...the only thing appears is the Norton Confidential.

I noticed Google Chrome doesnt have the ability but Mozilla Firefox does!!!

and like I said, all I did was restored advanced settings AND restored IE back to Factory settings....and now my Norton Search is gone and I cant figure out how to get it back :(

We have not asked what version of which Norton product your are using.

I am using NIS V21 and setting the Norton Safe Search can done through the Identity Safe Settings from the Norton Toolbar in your browser.

Click on the Vault is Open link on the Toolbar. Then click on the gear icon at the bottom of the Identity Safe window. Be sure Enable Norton Safe Search is checked.

Then you should have the Norton Search available again.

Hi itolman,

I was hoping you would answer the basic questions that floplot had asked - but I guess you missed them when you read my post.

While you are getting the info back to us (including peterwolf's question), please also have a look at Tools > Internet Options > Advanced Tab > and under Browsing make sure there is a check mark in front of  Enable third-party browser extentions.  If you change the setting, please restart your system.

Windows Vista Ultimate 64 Bit Service Pack 2

Internet Explorer 9.0.8112.16421

Norton Internet Security: 21.1.0.18

Yes Norton Identity Safe is configured correctly...in which Yes the picture is the same as yours; well except my Internet Explorer is my default browser but the rest is the same.

Yes I have enabled Third Party Browsers....it was the only way i could enable the Norton Toolbar to begin with :(

Not sure what you mean about Time Savers

Why did I reset Internet Explorer to begin with?  I shouldnt have to wait HOURS for a page to load.  And when I open a new window and re load the same webpage I shouldnt have to wait HOURS for it to load.  Did I wait these HOURS ? lol no but Minutes are just the same.

When day after day after day my Internet Explorer kept freezing up on me, I gave up and said "to heck with it; time to restore IE" and thankfully since then I havent had any hiccups when accessing certain webpages.  Do I know what those webpages are in question? NOPE! But I think it doesnt matter as I believe they were serveral different webpages...whether its Walmart.com or Amazon.com or trying to load up Facebook or IGN.com....as I've stated before...my Internet Browsing normally doesnt take that long to load...something was hindering my ability to browse......

I rebooted into Safe Mode

I launched Internet Explorer

I deleted browsing files

I hit the Windows Key on my keyboard and typed %temp% and clicked the temp folder I held down control and hit letter A...thus highlighting everything in the folder and shift deleted it

I re launched Internet and chose "Restore Advanced Settings" such as unchecking...third party extensions

I then restored IE back to Factory Settings

I then rebooted PC back into Safe Mode

I then opened "My Computer" Right Clicked C drive, went to down to Properties and chose Disk Cleanup, and deleted any remaining files

I rebooted PC back into normal mode

I launched IE...altered some settings..and re enabled Third Party Browser extensions and re enabled Norton Toolbar within the "Manage Add Ons" area

One thing I'm missing is that Norton Accelerator though

Oh...."Real time security"

None that I can think of

Hello

Could the problem have been your DNS servers?

Interesting because I don't recall ever having that option.

It must be added by Norton because there is no way to install it in the normal way.

It's not really an "accelerator" it's a "search provider" and if you go here you will see there are only 3 pages of providers and Norton is not one of them.

http://www.iegallery.com/en-us/addons?callback=true&featuretype=2

I can add other providers at will and changing any of them into the "default" makes them appear on the right click menu when something is highlighted.

Since it is not availible from the IE site, it must be added by Norton.

I'm not using the most recent version so that may explain why I don't have it.  I also have reset IE a couple times this year.

Hi Itolman,

Thanks for the feedback ad answering our questions.

I have done some more research and it appears once you lose the Norton Safe Search in manage add-ons, the only way to get it back is via a clean install of your Norton Product.

https://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Toolbar-Norton-Identity/Norton-Safe-search-not-available-in-Manage-Add-ons-IE10-search/m-p/1034003/highlight/true#M14494

start with this post - explains the situation, but does not really provide any answer other than the reinstall.  Please bear in mind this is referring to an older Norton product and some of the UI has changed.

I feel a clean install will correct this after seeing what all you have done alrady withiut success and my research appears to point to that same solution.

Thanks Yank.

Could someone that has it working please post the info or a screenshot of it?

Tools > Manage Addons > Search Providers.

Highlight Norton Safe Search

It's the info in the bottom section I'm interested in, I suggested a screenshot because I don't think you can copy and paste it.

Thanks

Dave

This is from my Windows 7 machine running IE 11.

Norton Safe Search.PNG

Thanks Krusty but I can't see the whole search address.

When you highlight something and right click and select "search with norton safe web" does the address bar in IE show that entire string?

nortonsafesearch.ask.com/web? bla bla bla?

edit- hang on a minute, I think one of my employees has a laptop with it working, I just installed a new clean version of NIS on it last week.

Neither left or right clicking the URL does anything.  I did try that before I posted the image.

Edit :  I'm inclined to agree with Yank.  I think a reinstall could be in order.

Wanna Bet?

This just worked for me but your results may vary and you get no pretty icon.

I'm using XP with IE 8 and I'm in the US.

The search string has language code in it as well as NIS info (retail, product version, etc)

However, I'm not using version 21 like my friend but this still works fine for me and I never had this accelerator option before.

Go here:

http://www.enhanceie.com/ie/searchbuilder.asp

Enter this string into the box:

The site says it needed TEST put in the search string location so it could identify it,, thats why you see that but it will become removed.

Put in the second box:

Norton Safe Search

Click install

Go to tools > manage addons > search providers

set it for default if you want it to show up in the main right click menu instead of the submenu.

Works fine for me.

Dave

Nope!

Sorry, I'm unable to post the seach string, it's too long for the forum and even in the code box it becomes incomplete.

I'll attach it below

Dave

I just did it on a windows 8.1 system with IE11 that never had a Norton product installed and it also worked fine.

Just don't tell Norton
