IE8 and IE9 Extremely Slow. Chrome As Fast as Ever on Vista Laptop

Download a fresh copy of NIS v 20 from here:

www.norton.com/nis20

Once installation is complete, open NIS and manually Run LiveUpdate as many times as necessary for it to respond "no more updates found". If a reboot is requested, reboot and then continue to Run LiveUpdate until it responds "no more updates found" and then reboot one last time.

Once totally updated, don't forget to Restore/Import your ID Safe data.

Please keep us posted.

I went through the whole reinstall just as you asked. Nothing changed. Zip. Nada. The only change I saw is now the Google home page is very slow. I still have one web site that is as fast as ever. It is WWW.RV.Net/Forum/.

Hi,

Sorry to hear about your problems.

I was very surprised to see that no-one from the above "Gurus" didn't ask you to check how your browsers operate when you uninstalled NIS and BEFORE a new installation.

It would be very helpful before, any further troubleshooting, that you uninstall NIS, then check with some well known safe sites, how IE or Chrome are responding.

Then we can know for sure if this is a problem related to NIS or not or a third party add-on or the OS.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

Great suggestion. I will remember this in case I go through this again. Thanks

This morning I took your suggestion. Did uninstall and Norton removal tool. After that, IE was unchanged> I spent about two hours going through all of the IE options. settings, and cleaning up everything that I could. Finally, I found one option that made IE run like it should.   In the Internet options, Security setings, internet zone, there is a check box to Enable Protected Mode. The box was checked. When this box is unchecked. and a restart of IE, IE runs as fast as ever. Put the check back in, my problem returns. I did a Reset all Zones to Default level. If the box is checked, the problem was still there. Only with the protected mode turned off did IE run like it should. There is an option to do custom settings which shows that there are a lot of settings inside of this. The default setting is 'Med-High' which is the same of both of my omputers. I need help on where to go from here. This problem seems to not have anything to do with NIS 2013, but it started when I installed NIS 2013. Would I be safe to reinstall NIS 2013 and leave this protected mode turned off?      THanks for help.

Hi zjjones,

I am running NIS v 20.2.1.22 (2013) with the Enable Protected Mode unchecked.  I checked the other 3 zones and that setting is unchecked also in those zone.  I have made some changes (don't recall off the top of my head what I changed), so mine reflects Custom rather than your "Med-High".

I have read whee the Enable Protected Mode works in conjuction with the UAC, so I checked my UAC setting and it is at Default.

Donl;t now if thathelps you any or not - but I see nothing wrong with reinstalling NIS 2013 and then check that setting again to make sure it isnt changed by NIS.

Thanks for the feedback with what you found.

What is UAC? WHere is it found? If it has settings, what should it be set at?

UAC is User Account Control, I'm not on Vista at themometn, but I assume it is close to the same, left clickon Start and Type UAC into the search box and Change your User Account Settings should come to the top of the list.  Click on it.

Mine is set on Default.  There is also more info at the "Tellme more about User Account Control settings link

I think you may be talking about Advanced UAC settings. My Vista Home Premium does not have that. I can enable and disable and that is all as far as I can tell. By the way, you can also get to the UAC settings through the Control Panel and Administrative Tools.

Hi,

Please try the following:

Method 1: Flush DNS

a.     Click Start, and type cmd into the Search box

b.     Right-click on cmd and click Run as administrator

c.     At the command prompt, type ipconfig /flushdns, and then press ENTER.

If the above Method does not work, go to next Method.

Method 2: Reset the Host file and check.

Refer this link: How can I reset the Hosts file back to the default?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972034

Method 3:  Try to uninstall and reinstall Adobe Flash Player.

Method 4:  If all the above don't work you may have to Reset IE8 or 9.

It is not advised to use IE9 with Protected Mode set to OFF.

Please let us know the results.

Method 1 run OK. I turned protected mode back on. Problem is still there. Turned it off, it runs very fast.

Hello again,

Try all the methods I mentionned and also please check:

In the Internet Explorer Tools/Internet_Options Panel, under the "Connections" tab, there is a button marked "LAN Settings".  Clicking on the "Lan Settings" button opens a dialog box where there is an option in this panel called "Automatically Detect Settings".

Please disable this option, restart IE and then reboot your computer.

See if it works and please report back once you have tried everything I mentionned. (Reset IE option included).

Steps 1-3 all ran good. I skipped step 4.

On request to disable Auto Detect under Lan Settings, it was already disabled.

SUCCESS! IE9 now runs like it used to before installing NIS 2013.

I still have NIS 2013 uninstalled. Should I reinstall it now? Should I do anything else? before or after install? Thanks...

Hi,

Glad to hear that the steps indicated helped. :-)

I suspect something wrong with the host file and/or Flash Player.

It is recommended to leave protected mode in IE9 set to ON.

You can try to install now NIS. I would recommend NIS 2012 as NIS 2013 (version 20..), is still buggy, but it's up to you.

You can accept the steps indicated as a solution so other users in the forum can benefit.

Let us know how it goes...

Regards,

I reinstalled NIS 20-2-1-22. All looks OK.Thanks.
