If I install Norton 360 over an existing subscription, what happens? Is it 365+existing subscription, or do I lose my existing subscription and it goes to 365 days? I think the version installed on my computer is not the latest version, but the version on the disc is.
you don't need to use that key yet. As all Norton products are subscription based ones, when a new version is out, you can just simply download it (the trial, or from the Norton Update Center) and then install the new one with the old key.
Here are the steps to upgrade:
1. Backup your Identity Safe data 2. Download latest Norton 360 installer: www.norton.com/n360s_4 for Standard or www.norton.com/n360p_4 for the Premium installer 3. Download Norton Removal Tool: www.norton.com/nrt 4. Disconnect from internet 5. Remove Norton 360 from Start Menu or from Control Panel -> Add or Remove programs 6. Reboot 7. Run the Norton Removal Tool, reboot (repeat it 2-3 times) - it will remove all the Norton products from your machine!!!! 8. Install Norton 360 from the downloaded setup package with your old subscription key 9. Run Live Update until you get no new updates 10. Restore your Identity Safe data
Sorry I probably didn't explain my intentions well enough.
My subscription runs out in 3 months, and I bought another product key (also has disc). Should I wait until the subscription expires until I redeem the code or can I just do it now with the hope that it will add 365 days to the existing subscription?
If you buy a new box, which is a normal subscription, that will overwrite the current subscription, and will start from 365 days.
Are you sure? I'm pretty sure last year I did a similar thing and it added to the days ("then why are you making this thread?") because I don't know if Gold is a different type of subscription and I want to make sure 3 months doesn't get wiped off.
I think it would be a good idea to contact customer service via the free chat program to ask about this type of subscription. Sometimes customer service will add the remaining days on to your subscription. Customer service are the ones to contact about subscriptions and activations and those kinds of problems or questions. Here is the link for the US/Can
This is the link for US/Can. If you need a different location, please consult your local Symantec site for the local free chat customer support link. If you need another location, I can find that for you also. Thanks
I want to make sure 3 months doesn't get wiped off.
If you are not sure that what you bought is a renewal subscription, than you should activate the new subscription after your old one is expired. I think this is the best solution. (I always do this as well :).)
If you wait till after your current subscription expires, then you will be without protection until you do activate it. I would check with customer support and see how the Gold subscription works since you do get other products with it.. You should check with customer support to make sure those other features that come with the Gold version don't get lost in the shuffle.
because I don't know if Gold is a different type of subscription and I want to make sure 3 months doesn't get wiped off.
Here is the link for the free chat program in UK since this appears to be where the Gold edition seems to be sold from what I could find.
OK I'll try to get in contact with Norton and update you guys.
Yes I'm in the UK. Is Norton 360 Premier version only in the US? I'm guessing Premier (US) = Gold (UK). If that's the case, the only difference to the 'normal' one is the online storage, right?
I believe that the Premier version is offered every where. The only difference between the Premier and the Standard N360 is the amount of online backup available. I really hadn't heard of the Gold version before, but I did some Googling and found it to be offered in the UK. I saw that the Gold version does offer more than the Premier version does, so that is why I suggested to call customer support about this issue. Thanks.
OK so I had a chat with one of the guys at Norton via link provided above (thanks flopot) and he said that he can assist me to add the days of the subscription to my current one, and that if I didn't do it through them, it would go to 365 days rather than add it to the 3 months I still have left (though I'm still skeptical - I did this last year a week before expiry and it added days).
He also said Gold is nothing special (as in it's not a different type of subscription for example). From the front of the disc holder/box (whatever it's called) all I can gather is that it contains a "Gold Card for special offers". More info' on this here (read the part after "all these great Gold offers"). I couldn't find Norton 360 v4 "standard". They all seem to be Gold here in the UK.
I've decided to wait after 3 months until renewal incase 3 months really does get wiped off as the guy from Norton said. I may renew a few days before and see if it adds days, and from there I may update this thread with my findings.
Thanks for everyone's contribution on this thread, it's really appreciated!
Please don't wait until the subscription is over because then your protection will end the day the subscription ends. Please put in the new key a day or two before the end of the subscription. Please come back here and we can give you the updated links if there are any new ones by the time you are ready to renew your subscription. Thanks.
which does not mention Gold but does show Standard and Premier. £49.99 & £69.99 for buy now but the site is crazy since it shows N360 V4 renew at £ 64.99 !!!!!
So I think you are right that GOLD is an add-on marketing gimmick although it might be a way, if you use it to renew your product of proving you are an existing user and so qualify for the upgrade price -- here in the USA you can get the Upgrade Price on any Norton Product once you own one Norton Product so that as an existing user of N360 you could buy GHOST for example at the upgrade price and not pay the full price.
<< he said that he can assist me to add the days of the subscription to my current one, >>
Having a suspicious mind I suspect that his "help" would be Renew on line which does automatically add on but opten costs a lot more than buying a cheap, legitiamate retail copy when it is on sale, waiting until the subscription has nearly expired and then just inserting the Retail Key so you only lose a day or so.
As you have been reminded -- don't let your copy expire since it stops working totally; not just works with old definitions.

PS Your PCWorld link is, for US users, a link to the store with that name -- similar to Best Buy, Staples or Office Depot -- and not to the PC World Magazine as I first thought <s>
Shop around in the weekend flyers since it can be much less at times eg £29.99 or similar after rebates etc. And even if you get a V3 copy the KEY will work on your V4 installation. But stay legitimate since there are used keys floating around!
