If you have any comments/reviews or problems about 16.5 update , please post here:

Reese,

Yes, I do have PD Pro 6 installed (though I rarely use it). I found the patch mentioned at the Avantquest support site and followed their instructions to install it. That seems to have solved the problem. Yeah! How it works, I have no idea. I'm just happy that I don't need to install/reinstall any Symantec software. Now I guess I could reinstall IE8, but I don't see any need for it as someone still using XP sp3.

Good spot by Reese -- glad I gave him the Kudos before seeing your reply.

PowerDesk is so far in advance of Windows Explorer FIle Manager that I don't know why Bill Gates didn't buy the company!

huwyngr,

The only Symantec products I've recently installed and used are NIS 2009 and NSW Basic. During this effort I used the Norton Removal Tool. I do still have the Symantec LiveUpdate application listed in my Control Panel. It's also listed among the programs that can be removed using the Windows tool. In its listing I can see that it was last used January 15, 2008. The removal tool seems to have left it alone. I'm wondering now if I need to remove it to avoid conflicts with later vesions of LiveUpdate.

I meant before you first installed NIS 2209 / NSW eg did you have an earlier version of Norton products or of some other security product.

If you are doing a new installation and cleaning up again using the Norton Removal Tool for the 2009 and earlier versions then I'd check after running it that Symantec Live Update has been removed and no longer shows in Remove Programs or Control Panel.

Run Norton Removal Tool a couple of times rebooting each time afterwards.

Then install NIS 2009 first and update it -- you could use the downloadable version to save as much updating:

New NIS 2009: Click on this link NIS 2009

since you can use your existing KEY by telling it to use a existing KEY and pointing it to your Norton Account.

After making sure it is fully up to date then install NSW Basic which should install the standalone Symanatec LiveUpdate for its components.

But you may want to see what others suggest on this proposal.

Moved post to its own thread for better exposure.
