Ignore bad sectors during copy?

I have Ghost 15 running on Windows XP Pro (SP3).  There is a Western Digital 2T second hard drive used for data that now appears to be failing.  (I proceeded to download a short video.  While it appeared to start OK it would not finish, and I was sent error messages inclulding "delayed write failed.")  I disconnected the drive and re-connected it.  One time it was not recognized.  Another time it was recognized, with all files listed as available.

My next step has been to use Ghost 15 to make a backup to a large USB drive.  There was an error message that the above drive "is about to fail."  The message says "to ignore this error and back up this drive, select "Ignore bad sectors during copy" from the advanced options in the Backup Wizard."  I've done that, and the backup started.

What should I expect from this backup?

Should I have used CHKDSK and one of its options first?  Which one(s)?

While the backup appeared to start,  it is runnning slow.

What is my best approach?

I'm trying to make a backup, using "ignore bad sectors."  The backup appears to be running.  Then it stalls and stops.  The amount of time estimated for completion of the backup increases (now showing 24 hours).  I'd just like to find some way of saving as much as I can from the crippled Western Digital hard drive.  Suggestions?

Tom,

I'd use simple Copy/Paste to another HD. Get your most important data off first. Good luck.

This is what I'm doing.  It's tedious because I copy a folder with a number of sub-folders, and find an error message "Can  not copy FILENAME: Data error (cyclic redundancy check)"  Then when I go back and select that one file and copy it, it works.  (I then have to select the rest of the files individually for copying.)

What does this error message mean?  Is this something that CHKDSK will repair?  Does the error message give a clue about what else can be done to repair it, or at least copy one entire folder with all sub-folders together without it stopping?

Unfortunately, I think your data is doomed.
