I'm Suspecting My Laptop Has Contracted A Virus of Some Sort

I am very frustrated at the moment with my Norton Internet Secutity 2012 program that I have installed on my laptop.  I believe I have gotten a virus on my laptop.  Doing full system scans comes up with nothing it tells me that nothing malicious has been found.  How can I rely on this product if it doesn't protect me well.... My laptop was working fine about a month ago one morning, hibernated it to go about my day, came back to it later that night to find that (on my desktop)my Adobe Lightrooms, Photoshops, and Pre-Installed Microsoft Word Starter will not work anymore.  The Adobe programs all act as though I just installed the programs and need to enter the product keys again (which is not the case) they worked perfectly fine before this issue occurred.  Along with those problems my start menu became pretty empty.  Went to do a System Restore to a previous day and it looks as though something has deleted a ton of restore points I only have a few to choose from.  I have tried various restore points but have gotten nowhere, but since have had some other issues occur, such as my internet connection will not work and says that a cable is unplugged when trying to diaganose that issue (have been able to fix that with a system restore point). Whatever this is it seems to make it look like my Nortons Internet Security is running, but when trying to open the program it will not work producing an error, tried re-installing the product which it says its working and when you do a scan it finds nothing but obviously something is wrong and this is not normal operation.  At times I have been told that I need to be an administrator to do something....Umm I am an admin for my laptop.  I am really trying to avoid doing a Factory Reset if at all possible, plus I'm not sure if that would really irradicate the virus or whatever this might be.  If anyone has any advice I would greatly appreciate it
