Import identity settings

I am running Norton 360 on Windows 7 64 bit. I have a previous installation of Norton Internet Security on a hard drive whose motherboard died. It was on an XP 32 bit system. I have access to the hard drive via USB connection. How can I import the identity setting from the internet security to my current 360? Can I append it to the new ones I have saved?

Welcome wildwdpc

The instructions dheeran has given you assume you can run your version of NIS on the old drive. This would involve being able to boot into your old XP installation from that drive. You could install the hard drive into your computer and set up a dual boot configuration.

I believe that if you cannot do this, you cannot retrieve your identity safe data. This is by design to provide security for the data.

If you do manage to access your old system and back up the Identity Safe data, when you go to import it into your N360 Identity Safe there is an option to merge the data with your current account.

Hello wildwdpc,

As long as the old drive is searchable, it is not necessary that you be able to boot into the old XP System. Having the old drive in an external USB enclosure will suffice.

Unfortunately, you did not mention which versions of NIS or N360 are involved, so I cannot give you the final restoration procedure.  What I can tell you at this point is how to locate and retrieve the data on the old drive.

On your working computer:

  1. Be sure your Folder Options are set to "Show hidden files and folders".
  2. Search the old hard drive for IdentitySafeDataStore.
  3. For XP it should be located in Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Norton\{0C55C096-0F1D-4F28-AAA2-85EF591126E7}\NIS_version.x.x.x\IdentitySafeDataStore\
  4. Expand the folders IdentitySafeDataStore > S-1-5-21-.... and copy just the contents of the S-1-5-21 .... folder to a new folder in a convenient location on the new computer. (Inside the folder you should see an IDDStore file and an IDDStore_bak file along with a number of favicons or a folder with favicons - copy all)

Final restoration and possibly merging with your current data will depend upon the versions of NIS and N360.

Let us know how you do
