About 2 weeks ago, I started the computer and it would not boot, showing "C:\Windows\System32\Config\System is not found or may be corrupted" I tried to work the issue, searching the internet blogs, and many help sites with no answers. So I switched drives D: is now C:, C: is now D: and installed Win XP Pro on the (now) C: drive. If anyone has the answer to the failure of the original C: problem, please advise.
After installation, I copied the new C:\Windows\System32\Config\System.drv file to D: and switched boot drive back to C: using Microsoft Console, rebooted, and was able to get to Safe Mode/Bios Setup, however when trying to start windows, I now get the message "When trying to update a password, this return status indicates that the value provided as the current password is not correct." I then searched for a free way (on fixed income, SSDI) to get past the password which was in place prior to error in line 1 & 2, but did not get anywhere with no options provided.
If there is not an answer to the inability to boot to the original C:, could someone please explain how to import file(s) containing "Identity Safe Cards & Logins"on D: to C: newly installed Norton Security Suite as I have had to add new "logins", of email accounts, but I had many more links with PWs in the file(s) that were on C: prior to logon failure, from D: to C:, (newly installed Win XP Pro. & new install of NSS) as they were not written down, only stored on Norton (with recent upgrade) (now on D:). I had tried to initiate NSS to start with original files and settings by changing the "Target and Start In) in properties of desktop icon, but it did not use files on D: as I had hoped it would.
I'm sorry if this is confusing to anyone, and if further info is needed, please contact me through this post or directly to my email. Many thanks in advance! ~JPR~
With a search and most of the assistance from Yank, the following has been located. It is only useful if you are able to access the files on the damaged C drive. We hope it helps.
The steps are:
Be sure your Folder Options are set to "Show hidden files and folders".
Search My Computer for IdentitySafeDataStore. Depending upon your operating system it may be located in Documents and Settings or elsewhere.
Expand the folders IdentitySafeDataStore > S-1-5-21-.... and copy just the contents of the S-1-5-21 .... folder to a new folder in a convenient location. (Inside the folder you should see an IDDStore file and an IDDStore_bak file along with a number of favicons - copy all)
To restore the Identity Safe Data:
If you have not done so already, create an Identity Safe profileon the new installation. Do not import any IE logins.
Search for and locate the IdentitySafeDataStoreon your new installation and make a note of the location.
Restart your computer in Safe Mode.
Navigate to the new IdentitySafeDataStore\S-1-5-21 .... folder.
Delete any content in the S-1-5-21 .... folder.
Paste the previously copied individual contents into the S-1-5-21 .... folder.
Restart your computer in regular mode.
Check your identity Safe to see if it now displays your data. If so, backup up your Identity Safe Data right now.

If you are using the Norton Security Suite from COMCAST you may be better off in the Other Norton Products Forum here since that is where it is dealt with .... and since GHOST and Norton Utilities are also covered there you will find plenty of people dealing with this kind of problem.
However if you are using Norton Internet Security then there is another Forum for that.
Pehaps you would confirm which you are using ....
If the thread is moved you won't lose sight of it because a link will be left here.
Thank you for your replies! Yes, it is Norton via Comcast. I'm sorry I didn't mention it in my original post. I'll try working this when I get some sleep, and coffee for a kick start later this A.M.
