(These are my steps)
First of all you should install all security fixes and servicepacks for your operating system. What brings you the best security suite if the basic is full of security holes.
Second install your favorite Security Suite ! Be careful from where you got it. Downloading a Security Suite outside the original website or buying it for a dream price (e.g. 4,99$ for a full security suite ) may be fakes or viruses. Good work must be sold.
Be sure that the Windows Update and the Security Suite's Live Update is on and checking for updates is set to automatic.
Do not trust curious mails or invitations to curious websites. Your friends may have viruses or worms on their PC's. So be careful with mails from your friends, too.
Don't ignore security warnings from your security suite or turn them of by disabling the security suite. The best security suite can't do its job when it will turned off.

I think the next things are really important:
- Detection
- Pro active defense
- Firewall
In addition, I always disable Windows File Sharing, Remote Registry service, Secondary Logon, right after I install Windows. I think Windows Update is not that important, but I prefer to intall a security suite on a “clean” Windows installation, and protection updates are always up-to-date. So, I usually turn off automatic updates and System Restore too. I’ve never had problems.

I currently run Norton 360 2.0.
Always use a “layered” security setup. Never rely on one product or suite for your total protection.

I use both, but then I am a bit of a security “nut”. I enjoy testing and using many different security programs and applications.
