Some tips on installing NIS 2010 update and uninstalling 2010-- should be same for NAV

1.    Download and run removal tool to uninstall 2009 product run it twice-rebooting between

2.    At the update site download the install file and save to desktop and run from there. Don’t choose the run option as advised on the web page. The file is: NIS10UPEN.exe (If I remember correctly)

3.    After install, several addition files are also saved on your system (for Vista there is a shortcut on desktop and files are actually in public download folder).

4.    The install file changes (Symantec is tricky here—I suspect it is the dll: NIS2010plugin.dll that is also downloaded) and when you open it there are options to uninstall NIS2010—NOT to install. But there is a text file: downlaodinfor.txt that contains the new key and a URL to load if you need to re-download the install for 2010.

5.    I installed twice: the first time I ran the installer from the web site and installed over the 2009 product. It took several minutes and after reboot several minutes for NIS2010 to load, and a couple of other products were problematic in opening. I rebooted again and NIS again took several minutes to open---so I used the uninstaller, which was formerly the installer and uninstalled using the second option---and turned on Vista firewall (was prompted to do so).

6.    Finally, I rebooted and used the URL provided to re-download the 2010 installer to my desktop—turned off my other resident security app. Trojan Hunter guard, and proceeded to run the installer.

7.    This time, it installed quickly and was ready to use---without a reboot---I configured some settings and ran live update and rebooted.  Norton came up normally and my other apps that were problems before now worked as expected.

Hope this makes sense and is helpful. The main points are uninstall the old, download the installer to desktop and run from there and, if your need to uninstall the 2010 product the un-installer is already on your system as is a URL to re-download the installer.
