There is a general problem in Norton Safe Web for all sub-domains of co.cc. The same problem may well apply to other domains too. Basically, all sub-domains for "companies" in the Cocos Islands (and their off-shore sites!) have been grouped together, and to some extent blacklisted (see below), along with all the other sub-domains that are kindly offered for free within the co.cc sub-domain, by logging into www.co.cc - the owners of co.cc. There may or may not be many "nasty" sites within co.cc, but the same applies to other high-level domains, such as .com and co.uk, yet they are not grouped and classified en-mass! Nor assumed that all their sub-domains are run by the same organizations! Don't tar all sub-domains with the same brush! Such crude grouping and "crying wolf!" just puts Norton's classifications/products/sites into disrepute!
First, Safe Web users see a green tick (OK) tab in a Google search, say, for any co.cc site, good or bad. (No non-admin, even a site owner, can specify a more specific domain/site.) Similarly, if a user clicks for a "Full Report", Norton reports no issues in any category. However, if a user then clicks for "user reviews", or checks any named site under co.cc, such as mine, it just links to co.cc reviews. Furthermore, the majority of reviews ignorantly libel the whole co.cc domain, just because they have hit certain bad sub-domains/sites - ludicrous and misleading! At first glance (fooled me for a while) when checking a tab for my site, its seemed as if these reviews were referring to my Web (johnnewbury.co.cc, which is merely a harmless personal Web). OK, Norton's own page does not libel co.cc or me/my web, but it is equally silly and misleading in its way, because there apparently are - as might be expected - at least some nasty sub-domains of co.cc, albeit no more the responsibility of the owners of co.cc or me than posts here are the responsibility of Norton!
Second, when I tried to register my ownership of johnnewbury.co.cc, Safe Web stupidly assumed, confusingly without warning, that I was trying to claim ownership of co.cc! No way would it accept the name of my site! (Presumably, Norton will check co.cc - once again - and/or report to me that I am not the owner of co.cc, as I have not placed my "ownership validation" file at co.cc. I have placed the file that Norton gave me in my site, but I guess they will not look there, and anyway, it is probably site/owner-specific, so no good anyway!)
Anyway, there seems to be no way for me to register my site/sub-domain. Even if a default match to *.co.cc, say, were useful, it should be possible to override it for more specific sub-domains, such as mine, and numerous others. Specify www.co.cc if referring to the owners of the co.cc domain site. (Not sure whether the Safe Web system is deficient here, or if co.cc is incorrectly defined at Norton.)
I would prefer no grade flags (or unchecked flags, with no link to Safe Web reviews of co.cc) from Safe Web if they cannot be more specific than co.cc! Conversely, I am now less sure how meaningful are Safe Web flags for other sites - maybe equally inaccurately declared OK or otherwise!!
