Incorrect Location!

I have recently subscribed to Norton Anti-Theft as a pre-cursor for a job I have been accepted for. I have registered both my phone and laptop and whilst the phone shows a location close to where the phone is, (some 6 doors away) the laptop is shown as being in an entirely different county - some 2-300 miles away and has been moving around the country over the period, although during this period my laptop has not left my home.

I guess that somehow my registration has picked up someone else's laptop!!!

Please can you advise on how I can rectify this as, at present, should I be in the unfortunate position of having my laptop stolen, I wouldn't be able to trace it!!!!

Hi Andmike

Thanks - I am in the UK in Hampshire and whilst I do understand what you are saying regarding the mobile phone side of the equation, I am flumoxed by where my lap top appears to be.  It is ethernet wired to the net and wifi enabled at all times.  As I said in my post, I have not moved it from my office at homesince I subscriubed but the "history" shows it moving from Yorkshire to Berkshire during that period and at 4 or 5 different locations.

I have a strong feeling that for some bizzare reason it has wrongly identified my laptop as someone elses!

Regards

Pete

Hello again coems.

Puzzling indeed.

When you say " It is ethernet wired to the net and wifi enabled at all times." - is that wired to the internet and WiFi or WiFi connected to your system?  I assume the latter otherwise I am puzzled about your arrangement.

I can only assume that the location is being picked up via your ISP and that the ISP may have made some internal reconfigurations that have caused the apparent move to Yorkshire.  As I said before I would try taking it somewhere different and see what shows up then.  This may give you a better idea of what is happening.

You should be able to easily check that it is monitoring your laptop by telling it to take a photo or locking it.

Other than the above I am not sure there is much more help I can offer.

If you remain unhappy with the functionality being offered by Norton Anti-Theft you could always try contacting a Norton staffer via their internet Chat line which can be reached here.  Under Norton's rules I believe you can also get a full refund within 60 days of purchase.  Details of this can be found here.

I hope that helps.

hi Andmike

Glad its not only me thats puzzled :-)

When I use the laptp at home it is on  docking station which uses an ethernet cable to plug directly into the router (find its faster than using wifi - beauty of living in the countryside here in the UK!!!).

I'll try moving location although Ive tried your suggestion of taking a sneak peak and there I was sitting in front of it - so thats one problem solved - it is my laptop :-)

I think I'll speak to Norton to clarify the precise location piece.

Many thanks

Pete
