I've been trying to resolve this for days now.  I know a few things about computers but it's not my day job.  I'm running Window XP with Norton 360 2.5.0.5.  Sequence of problem and attempts to fix are as follows:  

 

I start the PC, everything seems to go fine until N360 runs it's initial scan and the alert dialogue opens with a notice for manual fixes required.  The risk is an Infostealer, high threat with the file details noting 'globalroot\systemroot\system32\msivxhvmqbwoinjrkadvffirvvunnwhloxmi.dll' and nothing more.  Poking around on the web, i followed some advice to distable system restore and then reboted in safe mode/minimal.  I then ran HiJackthis and get the following log:

(of note, McAfee was removed via windowns add/remove programs utility years ago)  Then I ran Malwarebytes Anti-malware which noted 7 issues.  I elected to remove these.

 

Then I re-boot using selective startup/process system.ini, win.ini, and load system services but not startup items and noted the original boot.ini.   Things load well until N360 runs again and the process starts over with a different globalroot\...\msivx....dnn.dll.

I'm seeing Avenger used in your GMER.  Have you attempted to script this yourself?  Also, what else have you done, or programs used to try and remove the rootkit.  It may make a difference to our approach.

 

When this is done, you also still show some McAfee leftovers.  They will have a removal tool on their website that should remove these, or with caution a cleaner.

I'm pretty sure that I haven't used Avenger or any other scripts yet.  I've tried HijackThis, Sophos AnitRootkit, and MalwareBytes anti-malware.  

 

Thanks for the McAfee tip - I'm sure it's from a prior installation.

Now  (read carefully) If you have Spybot S&D uninstall it.

 

Also during the restarts with Avenger if Your PC has a Startup repair center like with HP and Toshiba tell it to start Normally if it kicks in.

 

1. Download Avenger to your desktop,

Make sure the "Automatically disable any rootkits found" is NOT selected

 

4. Click "Execute"

 

You will be asked to restart the PC click "Yes", when the PC restarts the load screen will takes slightly longer, then when it looks as though windows is loading the PC will restart again.

Then when Windows fully loads the Avenger log will be loaded, showing files it could or could not find.

 

5. Restart the PC again, then see if you can install  Update and run Malwarebytes

Quads & delphinuim - thanks so much.  Post-scripting I ran full scans of MalwareBytes and N360 with zero virus hits.  Attached is the Avenger and Malwarebytes logs post-everything.  I trust that I should be back to normal now.
