Hi people .
I am new to the community and having a question about Norton Insight
1.I start the computer and then run Norton Insight.
2. I get 100% scan needed for first time ,after refreshing ,85-90% trust…10-15%scan needed.
3.I perform the full system scan , Norton scans whole system.
4.I make another scan , now it scans very less files…(according to Insight results)
5.Whenever I restart the computer and run full system scan , Norton again scans the whole system
even when I have not done any modifications to those trusted files.
6.I think this should not happen,as I am not doing anything to the file…system should be scanned according to the trust.
7.Is this normal or it should work as described in point 6 ?
8.Also please give some details of the scenario when Norton Insight works
Is this feature available for consecutive scans only and not when you restart computer without making changes to files ?
I am using XP-Sp2 ,NIS 09 ,IE 6,Firefox 3.0.4
So is "Whenever I restart the computer and run full system scan , Norton again scans the whole system
even when I have not done any modifications to those trusted files." a normal behaviour ?
Note that same things happen even when I do not connect to internet......so no chance of worms or malwares
Also please give some details of the scenario when Norton Insight works
I still know very little about Insight
I doubt that it matters whether you connect to the internet or not -- there are other ways of getting infected.
<<I still know very little about Insight >>
You are not alone ..... the only people who know how it works are Symantec and I'm not one of them <s>
But seriously have a look in the root Norton Community at the blogs and there has been one devoted to Insight with a lot of background information.

Hi Michael0
Do You Know What?
You Have Made My Day!
Asking all those Norton Insight questions.
I only realised the stupidness of Norton Insight... A few days ago.
Basically...
I ran a Full System Scan
Not realising there was already a Full System Scan Scheduled to run later that day.
When the second Full System Scan - Popped Up! ... But only ran for 4 minutes ...
I couldn't understand what was going on
I thought there was something terribly wrong
Then I saw a comment on here about - Norton Insight .. And - Only Subsequent Scans
And.. The Penny Dropped!
I Agree With Everything You've Said & Asked - 100%
Norton Insight
It's us that need some - Insight
Crazy! ... Isn't It?
Who in the world...
Is going to regularly Full Scan their computer .. More than once a day.
Run a Full System Scan
Then run another Full System Scan ... Just to see it run quicker
Thanks!
Thanks for the pointer to the article I had in mind.
Hi Phil_D :
I read that article but can you tell me if Insight works Only when I do a consecutive scan ......and not when I restart the computer without any changes to files.
Why does it scan the whole system again even when there is no change to the files ?
Also read Zana's post (if you haven't)....that also raises the same question
Thanks for reply !!!
anyone having words about this ?
It will work also when you do restarts. You can see it in your history. Norton needs to do a full scan even when you think files do not change. Most files really do change with updates etc…
Hi,
I have the same questions for Insight. Not very clear what it actually does. Why scan twice?..In a day!
I' ve read the messages in here and many people ask the same questions. No specific answers are given. Does it actually work in any useful way?
Exactly........
Do I need to scan twice everytime for Insight to work......after restarting the computer ?
Since there are no changes to files..........in my case I have turned OFF windows 'Automatic Updates'
Hence there is no way of modifications to files in any manner.
1.I do a full system scan......... another scan after 1st works according to Insight
2.Now I immediately restart the computer .
3.I run full system scan immediately after restart , now it scans the whole system again.
4. WHY ?
Any help is appreciated
Your not understanding what InSight does. Run an InSight scan right now and you will see that it is scanning running “processes” not files on your pc. InSights job is to check that all running processes are safe. Not to verify files. It even says process on the left column.
I need to correct you a bit here, Dieselman.
Insight also checks all the libraries and files those running processes have loaded (mainly dll files, which you can see if you click Expand all). Regarding scanning other files, I'm not sure if it also scans files that are not exposed in the User Interface, a Symantec software engineer should clarify this.
There is another feature that has been overlooked here that might explain this behaviour: it's 'caching' and 'skipped files'.
NIS scanner will not rescan files it has already scanned in the same session (i.e., since boot). They are not however left alone, AutoProtect checks them if they are accessed, or modified, or run, or loaded.

Yes, of course:
The following are deemed interesting files: running processes, modules loaded in running processes, registered drivers, registered services, browser helper objects registered with Internet Explorer, and registered startup files in the startup group or the run registry key. Basically, this group includes all files that run or can run on the system.
Thats my point Tom. People are not understanding or even grasping the idea of what InSight does.

They understand even less what Caching is and how it works.
Hi Michael0 & Darkness123
Michael0 - You Asked...
1.I do a full system scan......... another scan after 1st works according to Insight
2.Now I immediately restart the computer .
3.I run full system scan immediately after restart , now it scans the whole system again.
4. WHY ?

Well... I Think I Know The Answer
Basically...
Symantec - Just like Microsoft .. Expect us to leave our computers on 24 hours a day
In Which Case...
Yes Norton Insight would make a difference to scan times.
However!
Not everyone wants to leave their computers on 24 hours a day.
So!
For people like me and you...
Norton Insight is completely - redundant / useless ... When it comes to reducing scan times
It's the same with NIS 09 ... Idles Scanning / Jobs
Fine if you leave your computer on while you're in bed sleeping.
Complete pain in the * if you don't!
I don't know how you feel.
But I'm absolutely fed Up .. With having to leave my laptop sit Idle.
In the hope that NIS 09 will actually finish all it's daily jobs
The Only Difference Between - Symantec & Microsoft...
Microsoft - Does give us a choice ... If we want switch off at night - Or leave On
And our computers work / carry on as normal .. Regardless of our choice.
Symantec - Gives us a choice ... But it comes with a punishment.
I have NIS 09 on my laptop
I also have a Desktop Computer which is mostly used by my little lad.
There is No Way I'll be putting NIS 09 on my Desktop Computer.
It's just not suitable for...
1/ Computers that are turned off at night.
2/ Computers that are only ever left Idle for short periods of time.
I'm starting to feel like Norton owns my laptop... Not Me!

Edit to add: Not all of the removed posts were bad, the problem is that in order to make this thread read correctly after the issue was removed, would have required an edit to just about every post following.
