Phil,

thanks for your reply. A multiboot envirn. sounds perfect. I admit that I wouldn't know how to accomplish that. Can that be done through Partition Magic?

Yes it can.  In the PM suite you will find PQBoot in the tools section, or something like that.  It is a boot manager.  It will allow you to boot either partition with the other one hidden.  Please remember that there are limitations on where a boot partition can exist.  The boot manager program should take care of all this for you.  PLEASE BE SURE that you have a current backup of things just in case, but I used this for many years with OS/2 and DOS.  I haven't used if tor years, but it is there.  You might want to read the docs on it.

My system has an 18GB HD running Win98SE. I created a 255MB partition at the end of the drive named 'D:', using Partition Magic 8x. I created the partition specifically to run DOS as a mission critical application is DOS based. The new partition has been formatted.

The issue I have is adding the new OS. PM has no facility for choosing DOS using the Install OS Wizard. The MS-DOS installation disk insists on installing to the C: drive. After using Symantec's online chat help, it has been determined the the new partition MUST come after the current primary drive, not before.

When attempting to install DOS, the error message: MS-DOS version 5.0 cannot be installed on your hard disk beacuse all your primary partition table entries on your hard rive are already in use.

Any suggestions as to how to get PM to install DOS on 'D:'? Or how to get DOS itself to install on D:?

Thanks!

I don't believe you can install it that way.  Why not use a multiboot enviroment?  That way you can put it at the beginning of the drive where it can be seen and the boot manager can handle it.  The partition can be hidden with the boot manager so that windows still thinks that it is on the C: drive (which actually is located after the DOS partition), as the DOS partition is then not available to the windows system.
