Install NAV on additional computer?

For some reason I have two NAV 2011 subscriptions.  One of these has one additional install left and the other has two.

My wife bought a laptop with NAV 2011 preinstall and the trial has expired.  So the program is still on this computer, just not functioning right now.  I want to register it with the registrations I have available.  I have a sealed NAV disk that came with the computer.  I haven't opened it yet.  Is the registration I need on this disk?

How can I register this version with one of the three installs I have available?  All I can find is opportunities to buy another subscription.

Thnks,

Richard

Before you do anything lets try to establish what you have!

Firstly -- How many computers are involved in addition to the new laptop your wife has with the preinstall.

Secondly -- Are the two subscriptions for 1 PC or 3 PC versions of NAV? Do you mean "subscriptions" or "activations under one subscription" ?

Thirdly -- are these two subscriptions, assuming that is what they are, recorded on the same MyNortonAccount that you should have created as part of the activation? Have either been used to activate an installation.

Fourthly -- Do you know how to see the KEY associated with a subscription when you open up MyNortonAccunt ? You just click on the entry and it shows more information including the KEY -- a string of 5 x 5 digit characters.

Fifthly -- this sealed disk that came with the computer could be for reinstalling or it could be the KEY to activate the subscription if you bought a 1 year or other subscription when you bought the computer (I know HP offer this).

If you haven't paid for the subscription to activate the trial installation then all you should need to activate the trial subscription and make if a normal one would be to copy the KEY from one of your two subscriptions in MyNortonAccount into the box when you click on whatever it says -- RENEW or SUBSCRIBE ...... -- and possibly on Use an existing key.

You do not have to reinstall the trial installation. They are fully functional but just time limited. So unless you paid for a subscription when buying the PC I'd forget about the sealed disk if you have activations available under your two subscriptions.

Note that if you have 3 POC versions that the clock starts running when you use an activation the first time so that they all lrun out together. But if you have two subscriptions started at different dates then they would expire differently.

Let us have some more information and we'll move on ....

PS It may well be possible to get Customer Support to combine your two subscriptions into one and if that might be beneficial then we can go into that later ....

If you can see a Product Key on the NAV Disk, then you can use that to activate the current 2011 version installed. A Product Key is a 25 digit/Character code which starts with the letter "V". If you can find it out, here is how you can update the subscription:

1 Make sure that your computer is connected to the Internet.

2 Start your Norton 2011 product.

3 On the bottom of the Norton product window, click Activate Now or Renew.

4 In the box, type in your Product Key.

5 Click Next or the arrow button.

6 Follow the on-screen instructions.

7 When finished, review your subscription details, and then click DONE.

Hello CyberLife

I would say we would have to determine first which subscription the O/P wants to use and if it has any remaining activations. I don't think that the user wants to use another subscription unless there are a lot of different computers being involved here. If there are already 2 active subscriptions and still have activations available, it would be better to use one of these activations since the clock is already ticking down. You are correct in saying how to activate the existing trial version, but I don't think he/she wants to have a 3rd subscription unless it was absolutely necessary. Thanks.

I agree floplot, I should have waited for his response.

Thanks!

Hi Richard,

The sealed NAV disk that came with the computer is for reinstalling NAV on your laptop. Most OEM vendors will provide you with a reinstallation method, be it part of the disc image or a physical disk. If the laptop was purchased with a subscription to NAV then you should have a license key with either the NAV disc or on a separate card that came with the laptop.

How are you seeing the number of installs left on the two NAV subscriptions? If you are seeing these in mynortonaccount.com under Products. what do they say for each entry under "Expiration Date"? If one says "Trial" then that is your Trial subscription and should not be reused. If the other has an Expiration Date (I.E. Jun 24, 2012 as an example) then that would be an active subscription.

Available installs for NAV that are larger than 1 install are usually for a multiple PC licenses. This means you can install the product and activate with that License Key on up to the number of machines you have installs for, like a 3 PC License as Hugh pointed out. This does not mean that you have 3 separate licenses though. You will use the same License Key for all installations and have the same subscription time and expatriation date for each installation.

As Hugh stated, you do not need to reinstall anything, we just need to determine if you have a valid License Key that you can use to get your subscription going.

Jason

Thanks Jason -- I'd just remind everyone that the OP says he has two subscriptions quite aparat from whatever the status is of what came with his PC initially as a trial ....

We badly need some feedback!

My wife's laptop came with Norton Internet Security preinstalled.  It has expired and the main screen has an option to "subscribe" but none to "register".  In my Norton account this NIS shows up with the option to "renew" which takes me to a "buy me here" screen.

I have  a Norton Internet Security-  KEY aaaaaaa... that is installed on two computers.

I also have another Norton Internet Security-   KEY bbbbb....  installed on one computer.

Each can be used on up to three computers.

Since her NAV is inferior to my NIS would I be better off to uninstall it and install one of my NIS instead.

Both of my NIS were bought as downloads and I don't have an installation CD.

I did download last night as I said.  Is that what I need if I do install NIS for her?  If I do that will I than get an option to register with one of my existing KEYs?

I hope this makes more sense than I did last night after too long trying to figure this out with my wife wanting to just buy this and get it over with.

If you click on Subscribe do you not get either a request to open a MyNortonAccount or a link along the lines of Use an Existing KEY ?

If not it may be a feature of factory preinstalled products.

If your wife has been using the Identity Safe I would suggest you Export the data file to a safe place so you can Import it later and then Uninstall lthe trial instsallation in the usual way through Windows Then restart the computer. If you want to be really careful you could also clean up with the Norton Removal Tool as below, restart the computer and then install NIS from that file you mention.

But there is a more recent version 18.6 .... which you can download using the link below. BTW your wife's computer is not a netbook and doesn't have the netbook version on does it? The KEYs are not interchangeable so you would need to do the clean up.

This link: Symantec Norton Removal Tool. will direct you to the current Symantec Norton Removal Tool.

Did either computer have any other security software on it when you started downloading to install Norton 360? If so what is it; if there was and you removed it how did you remove it? Apart from the normal uninstalling nearly every security program has a special cleanup tool on its website that you can download and run after the normal install. Let us know first and we can point you to the right tools to use including one for Norton products if you had one installed -- like the trial versions that come on new computers. If they are identical to what you want to install now you may not have to clean up and we can tell you the shortcut.

New NIS 2011:

Click on this link -- NIS 2011   This will download a single file of around 90MB which you should save on your hard drive where you can use it again if necessary -- Do not select Run but use Save when asked and remember where you put it!

Since the new PC will almost certainly have Windows 7 on it I would run each of those files by Right Mouse Clicking on the exe file and selecting Run as Administrator -- I find it tends to give better results on VISTA and Windows 7 but it's not available on XP .....

Let us know how you get on.

Hi Richard,

Welcome to the Norton Community.

Please see sections highlighted in BLUE above. In the first blue section you said your wife's laptop came preinstalled with NIS (Norton Internet Security) and in the second blue section you said she had NAV.

Can you confirm which product your wife's laptop has?

If she has NIS preinstalled then you should not have to uninstall it independantly nor run the removal tool, but rather just run Live Update if she has NIS 2011 and this will get her laptop up to the latest version.

However if she has NAV then you will need to uninstall and use the Norton removal tool before installing NIS.

Please confirm which product she has so we can offer the best guidance.

Best wishes.

Allen

Good catch, Allen .....

I want to thank everyone who helped me.  I did remove NAV and installed NIS 2011.  Now wife is happy and the pressure is off.

Richard

Hi Richard,

Thanks for the update. Did you run Live Update on your wife's computer until there were no more updates?

If you check Support > About you should show version 18.6.0.29.

Best wishes.

Allen

Thanks for letting us know that all's well ....
