I have a request .... drop the folder with the engine version number (eg C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Engine\16.1.0.33).
Every time you update the engine this number changes and it breaks:
a. GetRight running a virus scan on the file it just downloaded.
b. Trillian running a virus scan on the file it just downloaded.
In adddition to the above, if you have your tray icon set to "Always Show", the update makes a new entry that defaults to "Hide When Inactive" due to the path to the .exe changing.
You make a good point. Some major changes to the install and LiveUpdate technologies would need to be implemented to move away from the current updating technology. Changing this may not be the best solution to these problems.
I've created 3 separate tickets to track the issues you've mentioned - one for GetRight, one for Trillian, and one for the SysTray Icon. This does not guarantee that we'll change the way things are currently done, but it does guarantee that someone will look at these situations and see if there's a solution.
Unfortunately, I'm afraid this cannot be done without going back to a full installer type update, the NIS engine cannot overwrite itself while it is working. So we would have to forego LiveUpdate patching.
As I see it, the procedure now is to download the new engine folder (or just the changed files, copying the old ones from the old folder), overwriting Symantec driver installations, changing registry values and then waiting for a reboot for the new registry values to kick in.
There could be some in-update registry fixes to remedy this though, but that is a tough challenge.
What I hate about the install folder changing is everytime there’s an engine change, programs that call for a file to be scanned have to be changed in their options (such as Download Managers, etc.). The filename being called (Navw32.exe) is the same, it’s just the path keeps changing.
