We have four computers here in the office, all running Windows XP, and I installed the upgrade on all of them. One of the computers will no longer connect to the network or internet. It doesn't even recognize that there is a network connection, i.e. if you unplug the ethernet cable it would normally say "Network Cable Unplugged" or something of that nature, it does not. On the same morning, Windows XP released updates that also automatically installed.
When I called Norton support, the representative talked me through uninstalling and reinstalling Norton, and then when that did not resolve the issue, blamed it on the Windows updates, and then said I should contact my ISP to have them release the IP address or something of that nature. That didn't make a whole lot of sense to me, especially since the other three computers work fine. I tried to run "ipconfig" in the Command Prompt, and all that happens is it says "Windows IP Configuration" and then nothing else. When I run this on the other computers, it lists the IP Address, the Subnet Mask, etc. Also, when using Internet Explorer, it says that it cannot connect, I ran the Diagnostic Tool, it tells me to reset the router. When I hit next it gives me a runtime error saying the file name (C:\Windows\Network Diagnostic\xpnetdiag.exe) and that the application asked the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way, then it exits.
I have searched multiple forums, tried everything from booting in safe mode with networking, to running sfc /scannow, to resetting the winsock, which I have no idea what that is. Does anyone have any suggestions for me that don't involve completely wiping the computer and reinstalling Windows?
