Installed N360 v6, and now can't turn on Windows Defender

Hello,

I just installed version 6 this afternoon, and after the required reboot my Windows Defender taskbar icon developed a "!". When I clicked on it, a warning popped up saying that Defender had been turned off, and offering a link to click to open the program and turn it back on.

After clicking on it, nothing happened for a while, and then I got this error message:

"Windows Defender encountered an error: 0x800705b4. This operation returned because the timeout period expired."

I closed that out, and tried to launch Defender from All Programs in the Start Menu, but the same two messages came up (the first one immediately, the second one after another while).

What's going on? This didn't happen with previous versions of N360.

I'm on Vista Home Premium x64.

Thanks for any help you might offer.

UPDATE: I rebooted again, and again tried to open Windows Defender. This time I get the same first message, but now after clicking on the link to open Defender, there is a different error message:

"Windows Defender encountered an error: 0x800106ba. A problem caused this program's service to stop. To start the service, restart your computer or search Help and Support for how to start a service manually."

So, before, rebooting yet again, I went to Services in the Management Console. It claims that Defender is set to Automatic startup. When I click on "Start the service," I get a confusing error message saying that,

"The Windows Defender service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs."

Help!!

UPDATE 2: In Task Manager --> Services, Windows Defender is listed as "Stopped." Right-clicking to start it doesn't give any visible result; it still says "Stopped."

UPDATE 3: I went to the Windows Defender directory, found the .EXE (MSASCui), and clicked on it. Got the same first error message, clicked on it -- but this time Defender opened as normal! I am now running a regular full scan. Task Manager and the MMC both report it running normally.

Will keep monitoring the situation. Hopefully I will not have to manually drill into the directory every single time I want to open the program.

At least, I hope this helps anybody out there who installed N360 v6 and ran into the same kind of problem.

Unkless things have changed with version 6, Windows Defender is always turned off by the install of Norton products.  It is turned off for NIS 2012 and also NSS on both of my laptops.

The real-time function of Windows Defender can cause conflicts with Norton.  It seems there is a way to use it as an on-demand scanner - but that eludes me at the moment.

Bottom line - Windwos Defender is supposed to be turned off with Norton installed.

- Yes, after previous N360 installations Windows Defender got turned off, but I had never had trouble turning it back on till this version.

- As long as I could not turn it back on, using Defender as an on-demand scanner was a moot issue.

What kind of conflicts can occur? I haven't noticed any overt problems, and N360 does seem to work fine at stopping bad stuff when the PC is online.

- Bear in mind that this is the "original" Windows Defender I'm using, not the rebranded Microsoft Security Essentials that's bundled with Windows 8. If it were that one, I'd definitely turn it off with N360 installed.

Besides the scanning function, there are two features I like to use in Defender: Software Explorer and its registry monitoring function (warning me of changes made by programs).

Hi JorgeA,

Please have a look at this KB Article about error code 0x800106ba.  -  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931849.

And try this fix.  -  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918355

I hope this helps.

Hi JorgeA,

Here's an article I found explaining some things about Windows Defender (WD) and MSE in regards to how WD acts (reacts) to certain attempts to get it to function in real-time alongside anoter similar real-time product.  Please notice it is talking about Win  7/Vista - not Win 8 as you mentioned.

http://www.brighthub.com/computing/windows-platform/articles/105900.aspx

I have also done some screenshots of my win 7 system that is running NIS 2012 - it could be different from N 360 V 6 - but perhaps someone with N 360 V 6 can check it out farther.

This is with Norton and WD turned on - notice the note about running two antispyware programs at the same time.

WD and Norton on.PNG

This is the normal appearance.  Plese note, I can select (highlight) WD and then click on Turn On and WD will turn on.

WD off.PNG

Hopefully someone who is using N 360 V 6 will jump in and let us know if they can verify any difference between N 360 V 5 and V6 as far as WD is concerned.

 <edit>  Hi Dave,

That same error is included in the link I provided - hopefully these will help JorgeA.  <edit>

Hi Yank,

The above picture of Windows Action Center matches what I see with Defender turned on (in Windows7).  You can turn off the real-time component of Windows Defender and use it to schedule scans,  but I don't know if that would be of any benefit with n360 installed.

Hi Dave,

Thanks very much for the links. The first one especially was the exact error code I got.

Fortunately, I didn't have to try the fix because opening Windows Defender manually seems to have done the trick. I was even able to to a Full Scan without problems, and both WD and  N360 show up as normal everywhere I look.

The acid test, I guess, will be when I reboot the computer and see if Defender is off or on when the system is back up.

Much appreciated!

Hi yank,

Thanks a bunch for the link and for the screenshots.

I did a screenshot of what the analogous page looks like in the Vista Security Center, with the info about N360 and Windows Defender showing. Curiously, they don't claim a problem running both at the same time.

The article you linked to was also interesting -- it recommends not running Defender with MSE, but then at the end of the piece the writer does suggest running Defender with a diffferent antivirus program [none other than Norton shall be mentioned here! :smileywink:]. It sounds like it should be OK to run Defender and N360 together.

Here's the screenshot (never mind about the update settings, I have it set to tell me about them but not to install them automatically):

Thanks again for replying, I've learned a lot because of it!

Great to hear!  I hope this answer stands the acid test.

If this is solved, can you pick a post to select as a solution so that others searching can benefit.

Thanks,  Dave.
