Installing Norton after uninstalling another anti-virus program

Okay, I've done a complete restore to the default settings.  That includes McAfee installed.  So I presume I should uninstall it first and then install NIS, right?  Could I use Revo for that procedure? And how do I download NIS again and install it  without getting totally screwd up.  Otherwise, the computer goes to the electronics recycling depot this afternoon. As always your help is appreciated.

P.S. Norton Online is also part of the default recovery software.

Oh, and BTW I DO HAVE FULL INTERNET ACCESS.

ABC,

<< That includes McAfee installed.  So I presume I should uninstall it first ....  >>

Major important: Yes Uninstall McAfee using the WIndows Uninstall / Remove Programs and then a further clean up is needed. I would not use Revo Uninstaller under your current situation.

Here are McAfee's own instructions on this including a link to their tool:

http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507

After you complete what they say, reboot one more time and then install the NIS again.

I'm not clear whether you activated NIS already one or more times but if you did then, to get NIS again, if it was 2012 you had previously or if you want to upgrade to it now, the simplest sollution is to go to the Norton MyNortonAccount if you created that the first time round and click on the Download button there.

That will download and install a preactivated (if you did activate already) copy of the current NIS which would NIS 2012 and will not notch up an activation.

If you had and want to stick to NIS 2011 for a while until the current plague of faults especially with Identity Safe etc is resolved let us know and someone will give you the link to NIS 2011 which I don't have to hand ......

If your activation count is already out of synch then Customer Support via CHAT can sort that out painlessly ....

Thanks, Hugh. I'm roably going to wait until Monday or so to do this since I've got stability and wouldn't mind doing some work without fear for a few days.  I'll get back to you once I give it a try.  BTW, I have 2012 NIS, an upgrade from 2011 that appears to have happened when I click upgrades in the program a while back.

As always, thanks.

Hello ABC

If you want to stay with NIS 2011, here is a link for that.

http://www.norton.com/nis11

Please run live update until no more updates and then reboot.

If you want to stay with NIS 2011 for a while, you can change the setting  so it does not download and install NIS 2012 yet.

The setting can be found under miscellaneous, the first setting listed there and you can turn that setting to off. That way you can get NIS 2012 when you want to get it by coming here and getting the link for it or by using another way. Thanks.

Hi AppalledBC:

I doubt this is relevant, but if you have a Dell PC you might want to check out Cambion7's thread here before you try re-installing NIS on Monday.  Cambion's issue is slightly different - he has a Dell computer that came bundled with McAfee and can't get NIS 2012 to install correctly even after performing a system restore and using both the McAfee and Norton removal tools.  He is now assuming that it might have something to do with a Dell security feature running in the background.

Perhaps uninstalling McAfee from the Control Panel, running both the McAfee Consumer Products Removal Tool and Norton Removal Tool (with re-boots between each step) and going back to NIS 2011 as floplot mentioned might be the safest route. It's much more likely that your NIS 2012 problem is related to orphaned files/registry entries from either PCTAV or McAfee, but you never know ...

In the mean time, enjoy your weekend of trouble-free browsing.:smileyvery-happy:

It's an Acer quad core 64bit computer, so perahps no problems.

Imacri,

FWIW Ever since someone pointed me to a different website listing of removal tools from the ESET one I'm using the information from it:

http://thewebatom.net/uninstallers/security-software

partly because of the way it is set up with Info / Tool (different links if there are 32 bit and 64 bit tools) links

I post here the link to the Info page for the specific product and that way I'm not posting links to non-Norton exe files.

The Home Page has links to some other possibly useful tools.

Just mentioning it because the McAffee instructions include telling you te remove with the Windows Remove Programs utility before going on to their special tool ....

ABC,

If it works then certainly get clear of any important work.

I see floplot has given you the link to get NIS 2011 if you want to stick with that for a while, otherwise the MyNortonAccount Download button should give you a clean installation of NIS 2012 in the current version but run LiveUpdate a few times with a restart between to make sure.

Hi huwyngr:

The link you provided in message # 22 and the link I provided in message # 25 both point to the identical McAfee document TS100507, which states in part:

IMPORTANT:  You must uninstall using the Windows software removal utility (Add/Remove Programs in XP, Programs and Features in Vista and Windows 7) before running MCPR.

My link would not download the actual MCPR.exe file.

Thanks for the link to the Security Software Uninstaller page on webatom - I've bookmarked it for future reference.

That was not the point I was making -- but no matter.

I was able to downloa it from the McAfee site.

Good -- let us know how it all turns out, or if you have any queries ....

I should have mentioned that to get directed to the page for the dowload involves signing up on the site for access.

Just to update you. I still haven't uninstalled McAfee yet or installed NIS.  But I have successfully uninstalled PCTools and installed NIS on a third computer with the NIS downloader, which I shall use when I ger 'round to the problematic machine. Fear and trembling await me.

Here's a clear process for uninstalling PCTools.

Right click the program on the task bar by the clock. Turn the engine off.

Run revo with the advance setting for cleanup.

Do not reboot after the Windows uninstaller does its work in Revo when it asks you because you won't be able to access the leftover files that need cleaning up if you do.  Instead continue with the cleanup process in Revo.

When Revo has cleaned up, it will give you a message that final cleanup will happen after a reboot.

So go ahead, reboot, use the NIS dowloader, and relax.

ABC

Thanks for the feedback ....

Something I too learned the hard way! Not just if you use the Windows Uninstaller directly but if you are using Revo on Norton you have to tell the Norton Uninstaller (which is what Windows uses) you will Restart Later .......
