Installing Norton Internet Security for first time - error writing firewall settings

Hi all,

I am new to the Mac world, and have installed the latest NIS on my iMac running 10.8.2. When I restart, I am shown the setup assistant, and I go through the steps and confirm that I am done. I then see a dialog box that says:

"There was an error writing your firewall settings. The Setup Assistant will try to complete, but the changes you made during the setup assistant may not be saved. Please restart your computer after the Setup Assistant completes."

If I restart, it goes through the same loop, so it looks like something is preventing this write operation. As I am new to the Mac, I have no idea where to look. Has anyone else experienced this error? I searched the forum and could only see one other reference to this, in a message that was over a year old with no replies.

TIA,

Martin

I too have this problem. I contacted customer service and they said to reinstall as something had interrupted its services.

However I have just done that to no avail.

P.S. I am also using OS X 10.8.2

Sorry about the problems. It sounds like SymSharedSettings is not running.

Could those of you you who are experiencing this problem please run the GatherSymantecInfo script so that we can verify:

  1. Download the tool from here: ftp://ftp.symantec.com/misc/tools/mactools/GatherSymantecInfo.zip
  2. Place the file on the Mac client and double-click it. It will expand the GatherSymantecInfo.command file as well it support files.
  3. Double-click on GatherSymantecInfo.command. It will open a Terminal window.
  4. Enter the administrator password (it will not echo on-screen) and press Enter.
  5. If prompted to "Please enter the subscription key..." window, press Enter to bypass this screen. A subscription key does not apply here.
  6. Gathering information... will appear.
  7. When completed the Terminal window will indicate that the information was gathered and saved to the Desktop (SymantecInfo.txt and SymantecInfo.zip, which is simply SymantecInfo.txt in a zip archive). Quit the Terminal application.
  8. Attach the SymantecInfo.txt file here on the forums, or contact me privately on the forums and I will give you instructions.
