Internet connection continually dropped every hour or so after installing NIS 2009

I recently installed NIS 2009 and upgraded Windows XP with SP3.  Since then my internet connection has been dropping every couple of hours or so.  I tried NIS one click support and it does not work stating it has detected a possible problem with my network connection.  It tells me to check my cables (done), check my wireless connection (done, although I'm not using my laptop that uses the wireless connection I'm working on my desktop), disconnect my network device (not sure what they mean, disconnect my router?), and then check my browsers intenet settings to make sure I'm using the correct proxy settings (not sure what they mean here as well).

NIS 2009 16.2.0.7

Verizon DSL with Westell Wirespeed Modem

Netgear Wireless Router WGR614 v7

 

When I lose my internet connection the ethernet light on my modem goes out and my computer tells me that a plug has been disconnected.  After rebooting modem the connection returns but only temporarily.
