My apologies, but I don't know where to post because I'm having trouble narrowing where the problem is coming from. .
My browsers either hang or have slow internet connectivity on 3 of our families computers (win8, win7, and winXP).
win8 machine: I'm running internet security and Norton family. If I close Firefox when it is slow, then restart the system the internet works for a while before slowing down again (esp. after I wake up the machine). I thought the problem was Firefox, but resetting and reinstalling doesn't fix. Same thing happened when I tried to installing Chrome or opening IE. I thought maybe xmarks plug-in, but after reinstalls and disabling still problem.
winXP: this one had Norton 360 and Norton family. Problem was worse than win8 machine, because I couldn't close Firefox (bad crash), after a while couldn't' even open it after a reboot, and eventually started getting strange registry errors and Norton 360 wouldn't even load. I rebooted in safe mode with networking, used the Norton remover tool and took off all Norton products, used the power eraser, ran glary utilities to fix registry errors, then put Firefox and Norton 360 and Norton family back on and it seems to be working for now.
win7 machine. No internet connection until I uninstalled all Norton stuff.
I've tried and retried so many different things since last Friday on these computers that I am having trouble keeping it all straight. But with all the different operating systems, different browsers, and different Norton antivirus products (360 and internet security) one of the only things these computers have in common is Norton Family Premier. But I didn't change NF and it has mostly been running fine since I put it on a couple months ago.
So if someone can give me some advice or point me to the right place to post I would appreciate it. I guess I'll try removing NF next, but I hate to do it because one of my kids really needs that layer of protection (and I bought a subscription to this product).
I reckon these internet problems are because once you have Norton Family on your pc all your web requests are all going via semantics server and unfortunately their server is unreliable, hence if your request cant be approved you get blocked.
I am guessing also that both the free and paid for products use the same servers for validation, so both are equally affected.
When the servers are unavailable your laptop is little more than a paperweight. Norton needs to invest in a network/server system that is fit for purpose or withdraw the product.
It also means if Norton issue a duff update (as it seems to have done with 2.9) you could lose internet access permanently since you wont have internet access to get an update and you cant uninstall without internet access.
The artchitecture of Norton family protection is not very well thought out. Why can't it just use a local database like my anti-virus software?
Not to worry though your isp has been told to implement web filtering so this product hasn't got a future anyway.
I've uninstalled norton familly safety and my children are off my back - bye suckers.
UPDATE: the problem is recurring again on my winXP machine (Firefox hang). HOWEVER, I may have found a work-around. If I CNTRL-ALT-DEL, then end processes starting "NF" from the task manager, the browser starts working again. Norton Family pops up on my status bar a while later, so it seems I haven't permanently disabled it. In fact, last time I did this, the little Norton Family paw-print icon wasn't showing on my taskbar until I did the little "end process" trick.
Our development team and l will be glad to setup a remote session with you to check into the issue further. Please let me know when would be the most convenient time for you by private message in the forum.

The Norton Family team has released an update 2.9.0.26 via Automatic LiveUpdate. We believe we have resolved the internet connectivity issue. You will be asked to reboot your machine when the update is available to your machine via the LiveUpdate. Please retest and let us know if you are still experiencing the issue.
How do I download the newest update? The above post said it would be downloaded automatically. I still don't have it. I tried going to the online family site and downloading it. But I still have version 2.9.0.21. I also went to Norton 360 and ran Liveupdate and it didn't change my version of Norton Family.
I am using Windows 8. I am having the same internet connectivity problems over and over again for a couple weeks. I have problem solved with Dell Techs and Internet Techs and now I am on here. Google chrome will work in the morning then when I come back later and it's been in sleep mode, the internet doesn't work correctly. It seems to sometimes at first then it just lags and says "Norton has become unresponsive" and asks if I want to close it. Then it just stop working all together. Internet Explorer just circles around and the page stays white and never loads.
Only work around is to restart the computer after reseting the modem/router/Voip line. It intemittently works after I do that.
Thanks for the post. It's possible that the LiveUpdate hasn't sent the latest update to your machine yet. We are working on adding the update to the Norton Family website, so the users can download the latest version from the website. If for some reason that you don't get the release via the LIveUpdate. You should be able to download it from the Norton Family website later.
Thanks for the update. It sounds you have the latest version on the machine already (because the internet issue has been corrected). If you have the latest Norton Family 2.9.0.26, you don't need to download the update manually.
