I have been contacted by phone by sales people claiming to be with "Windows" services. When asked a direct question, they admit they are not from Microsoft. They say I have a known virus and they will remove it for a fee if I allow them to access my computer. I have Norton 360 and am happy with it. At least I think so. Anyway today I tried a new tactic. I told them I had a Mac and did not use Windows. The guy replied that he could see my connection to the net and gave me my name and correct address and said he could see a windows machine. The thing is he used my first name, but I go by my middle name for pretty much all purposes including registering software. This was a little scary. [Since 9-11-01 the airlines require me to use my first name rather than my familiar name.]
Can this guy really "see" my connection to the internet and harvest my name, address, and other info? If so, how do I block that while still connecting to the internet . I will never grant access to my computer to someone calling me on the phone --that's insane!
This is probably pretty basic stuff, but I do not want to voluntarily give up personal info if I can help it. Hopefully someone on this forum knows a solution.
Thanks,
