I have Norton Internet Security 2006 loaded on my computer. It is automatically updated and current. Two days ago, I had some strange problems, like (at different times) the computer froze up and I could only shut it down. Then it would not boot up, but by attempting several times, it finally booted up - but very slowly. At another point the screen just went black and I had to reboot and had the same problem booting up again.. I surmised I had a virus. I tried to download AVG and Malware Bytes so I could run some scans. When downloading AVG, somehow I accidentally started downloading Norton Internet Security 2011. The screen said it was erasing any prior Norton installations. I though I had stopped it but.... I called a friend who ran all kinds of diagnostic programs (remotely). He did find a virus but he said it was not a serious problem. After he finished I cannot open Internet Security at all. Part of the screen appears and the only way I can get rid of it is to click ALT/Control/Delete, go to Task Master and close the program. I get a lot of spam and the antispam used to get rid of it. Now it doesn't work at all. Plus the icon in the bottom right of the home page doesn't even show that Norton is operating.
My question is twofold. Did my friend do something that caused Norton to stop working? What can I do to get it to work? If it wasn't he who caused the problem, maybe it was me when I accidentally started downloading 2011. If that is the case, should I just reload 2006 so it will work correctly?
