Internet Security 2011 Installation Problems

Hi,

Im looking for some help regarding an issue i have encountered whilst trying to install the internet security package.

I am able get through the installation process (100%) until i get the following error message:

The installation has encountered an error and is unable to continue

An Error report has been created that you can send to Symantec.  We will treat this report as confidential and anonymous.  It will not be correlated with any personally identifiable information.

To send this report to Symantec now, click send (recommended)

I have tried to install many times and conmtinue to get this message. The operating system i am using is Windows Vista.

I have preivously had an older version of Norton installed which i replaced with a Mcafee product and would now like to use Norton 2011.

Just out of interest i tried t install the trial norton 2012 trial version, encountering the very same error message.

Any help is appreciated,

Thanks in advance

Hi huskyandfaz:

Welcome to the Norton community.

Residual files or registry errors from your old McAfee product could be causing problems with your NIS installation.  First try running the McAfee Consumer Products Removal (MCPR) tool here and then re-booting your PC to ensure McAfee is cleaned from your system.

If that doesn't solve the problem then follow the instructions here to perform a clean re-install of NIS using the Norton Removal Tool.  Instructions will work for either NIS 2011 or NIS 2012, depending on which version you prefer.  It might not be a bad idea to perform a clean re-install of NIS regardless of what happens after you run the MCPR, since you've had different versions of NIS on your system and might run into problems with NIS down the road because of this.

Thank you for your reply, will give that a go :)

When you refer to 'clean install of NIS', how do i do this?

Sorry to be a pain but the link for the norton removal tool doesnt seem to work for me. 'internet explorer cannot display this page'

Hi huskyandfaz:

No problem at all.  I'm not sure if there's an issue with your IE browser (which is quite possible if the Smart Firewall of NIS isn't installed correctly), but the links work in my Firefox browser. Click here on this link to be re-directed to the clean re-install instructions for NIS, and if that doesn't work, search in the forum for a thread originated by BugOutMachine titled NIS 2012 - Optimization Function Will Not Stop "Running" and look for message # 13 of that thread.

If it's the link to the Norton Removal Tool (NRT) in the instructions that's the problem, first try the generic link at www.norton.com/nrt.  If that generic link doesn't re-direct you correctly, try the direct link to the NRT start page here.  And if that doesn't work, the direct link to the NRT download page for all 2006 to 2012 versions of NAV and NIS is here.
