Intrusion Prevention disabled

ok, i booted up my computer, and everything looked normal.  i loaded up the game Sacred 2, and when i was done, i closed the program through their in game menu.  at this point, i saw that Norton 360 had a problem going on, so i clicked on it to see what it was.  intrusion prevention had been disabled.  this has never happened before on ANY program i use on my computer, and for the life of me, cannot figure out why it did now.  i ran the virus scanner, and nothing came up.  so why would intrusion prevention be disabled?  i didn’t do it, and the anti virus software cannot seem to find anything wrong, so what happened?  who or what disabled my intrusion prevention?  does anyone have any ideas?

One other important question. Are you able to turn it back on again? or is it blocked?

Hi Vaunaut,

I think, during the installation of the game Sacred 2, it may have some how disabled the Symantec IPS BHO(Browser Helper Object) and that turned off the Intrusion prevention. It may be due to some minor conflict since the virus scan came up as clean one. Like Stu posted, it is important to know whether you are able to turn it on back again. If you are able to turn it on, then check whether this happens when you play the game.

Hi Vaunaunt,

Have a Good Day !

If you are not able to turn it On back from N360 console, Go to Tools -> Manage Add-ons from your IE and check if the 'Symantec Intrusion Prevention'  is in Enabled status. If it is disabled, enable it back.

Thanks.

yeah, i did turn it back on.  the part where it was turned off without my knowledge was my main concern.  i have a brother who had his computer attacked by a virus that got thru 360, so i was afraid something might be happening again, only to my computer.  i already had the game installed and have run it many times in the past, but this particular situation was the exception.  intrusion has never been turned off in the past, at least to my knowledge it hasn't.

at this time, norton antivirus is behaving oddly again.  it says my browser is not set to detect fraudulent websites, and the fix button isn't doing anything.  i'll start a new thread if i can't figure this out soon.

and my thanks to anyone who responded.  i'm a little nervous when it comes to online security, so this is much appreciated.

Did you Turn it On via the Norton U.I. or by I.E. Add-Ons?  Also, what Version of Norton 360 are you using?

By what you mentioned, I think you may have a Threat on your computer.  Since it is affecting your Norton Product, please Download and Install Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.  This is an excellent On-Demand Scanner; you do not need to Pay of it as you have Norton as your Real-Time Protection.  Update Malwarebytes.  Then, dis-connect from the Internet and do a Full Scan of all Drives in Normal Mode.  Once that Full Scan is Completed, re-start in to Safe Mode and do another Full Scan of all Drives, dis-connected from the Internet.  I would also suggest doing a Full Scan in the Administrator Account as well in Safe Mode.  Re-Start the computer once these Full Scans have been Completed and let us know how you got on and if Norton is still acting strange.

I'm having the same problem as the thread starter, and it does not pertain to anything I have installed.  I haven't installed anything recently.  One day I come in, bamn, a slew of things were turned off.  Rebooted, ran a scan, had it run the full gammut, things seemed fine.  Checked this morning, everything was fine.  Came in today, the intrusion prevention was turned off.  It says I'm running version 2.5.0.5  I did some digging on this and haven't found any solutions or anything addressing the matter.  I did find that this appeared to have been an issue back last June through August, but never read anything about the resolution to the issue back then.  Nothing else appears to be affected.  My browser setting don't appear to be changing, nor am I noticing any other suspicious behavior.  But the altering setting is enough to cause me some concern, and hearing whether or not this is a widespread issue with Norton or some external threat would do wonders to put my mind at ease.

Hi lordbitememan,

If you are using Norton 360 2.5, better upgrade to latest version - Norton 360 3.0 and then check for this issue. If you have a current subscription to Norton 360, you can update to the latest version by downloading the update (Norton 360 v3 Standard or Norton 360 v3 Premier). When you install the update, it will remove your previous Norton 360 product and apply the subscription information to Norton 360 v3. You can continue using the new version by just renewing the subscription when the current subscription expires. Please proceed with updatig your Norton 360 to latest version and let us know how it goes. You can use the same product key of Norton 360 2.5 for activation of Norton 360 3.0. After that, check for the intrusion prevention. Also, run a comprehensive scan from Norton 360 3.0.
