My intrusion protection logs have always pretty much consisted of two entries. The first being 'intrusion protection is monitoring xxxx number of signatures'. The other one stating that 'intrusion protection has been enabled'
Despite my repeated reading of the help section within Norton and also much Googling, i can't seem to ascertain the answer to what must be a very simple query to anyone with a modicum of knowledge of such matters (not me).
All i wish to know is of the two aforementioned statements, does the latter of the two mean it was activated and dealt with an attack or is it simply stating the protection service is running?
I've often found the Norton chat service very helpful, but not today lol (changed the names to protect the etc. etc.).......
(A long, long time ago i entered my simple question in to the chat box)
Norton Support:
You are being transferred to Norton Support.
Norton Support:
Welcome to Norton Support, my name is Norton Support, Can I please have a minute to go through the information you have provided?
Norton Support:
I’ve noticed you have been waiting for longer than expected. I’m sorry for this inconvenience and I assure you that I can help you to fix the issue you are facing
Myself:
ok..it's just a simple question
Norton Support:
Could you please elaborate on the issue?
(??? hard to elaborate on a simple question)
Myself:
? in what way
Myself:
i just want to know when the intrusion protection logs say 'intrusion protection has been enabled' does that mean it was an attack at the time or is it merely quoting the 'service' is running
(another couple of eons go by with no response)
Myself:
hello?
Norton Support:
(my name), I see that you want to know about Intrusion protection
Norton Support:
?
Myself:
just the answer to that one simple question
Myself:
it doesn't give it in the support facility
Norton Support:
I understand your concern. I'll do my best to help you.
Myself:
thank you
Norton Support:
(my name) , your case number is xxxxxxxxx , please write this down.
Myself:
ok
Norton Support:
(my name), Intrution protection is a feature of Norton which helps to keep the Norton files safe from viruses.
Myself:
oh my god lol.......Norton Support no offence intended but....that's a comical response...i'm ending this session now...i know what intrusion protection is...i merely asked what should be a very answerable question...i despair...ok thank you anyway...can i close this window now
Norton Support:
Before we go can I check with you that the problem you contacted us about has been fixed and that its ok for me to close this case?
(! ! ! )
Myself:
no it hasn't but i'm closing this session....what an absolute farce...take care...goodbye
(I must point out normally i would be a more patient and kinder person but the prolonged gap between responses was sapping)
Incidentally, i'm seeking clarification as for only the second time ever (to my knowledge) an attempt 'intrusion attempt' was made on my computer. Both occasions have been relatively recently while surfing the very well known media and computer site 'Digital Spy' (amazing forums for technical help of all sorts of computer and media equipment). They have been widely reported issues with their advertisements downloading all sorts on people.
I need to know if when the intrusion protection logs say 'an attack attempt' was made on my computer, that that is the only attacks made and 'intrusion protection has been enabled' doesn't refer to a different type of attack?.
