"Intrusion Protection" OFF for "limited account" user?

Now it seems working!

I'm sure that it starts red, then become green.

I try a reboot.

Hope I'm not speaking too early.....

UPDATE

BAD news... red and not working again after a reboot.... :smileysad:

For me it seems to work too since last weekend.  I am feeling now much more safe when the green check is here.

That green appeared 20.7. where norton showed that last update was the day before (where I only saw red ).

I had the same experience after reboot. For some time it was really again red and I thought it was only a short success, but after some hours a click on the red icon told that it is busy with some protection checks and later

the green icon came up again and was not lost since some days where I did not reboot, I did turn off standby.

Did I read correctly that some Norton developer promised here to publish when there are updates related to this problem?

I didn't see a message, maybe this new green check in restricted user account was not planned.

Hope it stays green and really protects in future.

Guenter

Any update on the eta of this patch?

3 of the 3 computers I've installed this liscence on (vista, 2xXP) are all still experiancing the same problem.

You might care to look at this thread. If your problem is different to that described by my post no 25 in that thread, then kindly advise.

The "your pc is not protected from intrusion attempts" problem did not seem to exist 07/26, then returned on a restart 07/27 on two different Vista 32bit SP1 PC's with single Administrator-level accounts. On my XP Pro SP3 notebook, the problem has never appeared.

I have no evidence that the problem, at least on Vista systems, has been resolved.

My vista machine has a single admin account.

One of the XP machines have 2 admin accounts and the other has 5.

Sorry I do not understand. What is your problem and how is your set up. I have no issues with 2 admin accounts and no limited accounts, and am not aware that anyone else does either. If your problem is indeed different to that already commented upon by Symantec then you might care to amplify.

After reading all the posts on this problem, I would like to add one more wrinkle.  Yes, I too have the red "x" problem on the 10 Windows XP Pro SP3 PCs that I maintain for a local non-profit.  And yes, I have gone through the chat tech support route.  You would think that they would be aware of the generic issue.

A remove/reinstall/update today (7/29) on a test PC did not solve the problem.

I have a personal new PC running Vista Business, SP1 which has an intermittent red "x", running under the administrator account.   About every 6 or 7 boots, the green check turns to a red "x" during startup.  Clicking "fix" clears the problem.  I have been on line with chat support and they have removed and reinstalled 360 V-2, and checked everthing, but the problem is still there.  Since it is intermittent and can be fixed, I a going to live with it until Symantec issued a fix.

I have also had this problem since May.  Since there was a report of a solution, I contacted Norton help and pointed them to this thread describing the problem.  They had me uninstall and reinstall the software.   I did this on July 27th.  It appeared to go away and now is back.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled this software at least once a month since April because of various bugs.

Having the help desk give you a solution that does not work adds salt to the wound.

First of all, there is not one problem reported in this thread. Some users have an issue with "limited account users", whilst anothe has reported having a problem using administrative account user. So with respect, I do not know what problem you have, what operating system you are using or what version of Norotn 360.

I have posted in this thread a link to another thread where some issues have been raised, escalated and answered by Symantec.

I am not directing my reply here just to russeldj, but to everyone. You do need to follow links and read other threads. If you problem is as described then you have the current position and it has not changed. If you have a different problem, then you need to post the exact steps to recreate / reproduce your specific issue.

Finally, I would point out that some users have had their issue resolved, some not. It is possible that to determine which class you fall within, help desk felt it worth carrying out a reinstall. The solution may have worked for some but not all.

For those that it did not work for, you need to be patient. I refer you all again to either my post in the other thread or to Tony Weiss's post, message no 80 in this thread.

I don't understand why you have a problem understanding my problem.

It's quite simple, on all of my norton360 machines, under network overview, all of them appear with red crosses, however on the main norton360 window of each computer they are all marked as secure and green ticks.

This admin/limited account stuff is basically irrelevent, as I've already listed my windows accounts status' in a previous post.

Excuse me but is your above post directed at me? If not please ignore this, if it is, then I cannot help you because I do not understand. Your description is not clear to me and I have already answered your msg no 83 with mine of 84. Your post msg 85 only added that one XP machines had 2 admin  accounts and the other 5. Your Vista machine had a single admin  account.

I asked myself In what way that changed things or was different to the circumstances set out in my post 83. Now you say the admin/limited account stuff is irrelevant and you refer to all red crosses. I cant understand, so I bow out.

Good luck!

It appears to be futile, but I want to add myself with three PC's that are experiencing this problem.

I also want to complain to the socalled "expert" that asked why one individual was using limited accounts in XP. The intent of the limited accounts, at least in my inexperienced belief was to reduce the risk associated with running as administrator, especially while connected to the internet, or am I mistaken?

As the subject heading indicates in this thread I have  the "Intrusion Protection" OFF for "limited account" user?"  problem.  I am on windows XP SP 3. Norton 360 2 version  2.3.1.4.

Since  gnagler reported a solution I contacted Norton's Support.  I included in my request for help a link to this thread describing the problem.

Their solution to every problem I have had so far is to uninstall and reinstall the software.  I was willing to try it since there had been a report of a solution and I had told Norton what the problem was.

I did what they suggested and it did not work.  It is frustrating when you have the problem for months, the software provider gives solutions that don't work, and  finally this is not the only problem I have with Norton 360 v2.

"If you problem is as described then you have the current position and it has not changed." why doesn't Norton know that?

Finally I do believe that Tony Weiss is happier to hear "Thank you for letting us know you are still seeing the problem" than not.

I read this thread last week after installing Norton 360 v2 on my wife’s newly rebuilt laptop (an HP9060 running on a fully updated Windows Vista Home Premium). Like many others here, I was getting the dreaded red x and the ‘Intrusion protection is off’ message. Thinking it was something I’d done on the build, I was looking for clues as to what I’d done wrong. Having read the thread I resigned myself to this being an issue that wasn’t going to be resolved soon, if at all. This was on the ONLY account set up on the machine, incidentally, which is set to administrator status.

Over the weekend I was moving some backup files of the build, temporarily stored on the D drive of the laptop, to my main system. For speed I switched off the wireless network connection and physically connected to the LAN before booting. To my surprise Norton 360 came up with a very unexpected GREEN TICK! Out of curiosity I shut down, disconnected the cable and switched on the wireless networking again before rebooting. The result was the dreaded RED X on the Norton icon. This even happened if I left the machine connected by cable but with the wireless networking switched on.

After repeating this test a number times I can definitely confirm that, on this machine at least, the issue is related to booting with the wireless network switched on. Are Symantec perhaps unable to resolve this issue because they’re looking for it on hard-wired machines that don’t have wireless networking?

As previously reported, I have the problem only on limited user accounts ( as the thread title suggests). Your problem seems to be on the main admin account.

One of my computers is connected by cable the other wireless. Both have the same issue, so I don't think that is part of the main issue, though it may help Symantec find a solution. They claim that they have solved the problem in some instances, though I suspect that the user may just have given up and left the accounts as admin. out of desperation.

We are assured that an army of people are working on resolving the matter, and that we should be "patient" and wait for a patch. Given that I (like others) have had the issue since upgrading on 3rd june, I can't help but question exactly how much resource is being devoted to this problem. The excuse that they have had to resolve "bigger" problems, just condems them further

I have been willing to let Symantec some leeway in resolving the intrusion protection error.  But enough is enough. How many months has this error been occurring now?

It is time for Symantec to receive some truthful publicity. They have had enough time.

They are too busy working on Norton 360 2009 to be concerned about petty bugs in existing software.

I have no "Intrusion Protection" on Norton 360   version 2, and when I switched to Internet Security 2008 I again have the same problem.  It did work at first but no longer.

I have worked with the  Symantec staff and Symantec Research staff and they devoted HOURS to helping resolve this problem.

But it still remains with no solution.

I get various error messages but all of them reflect that the Intrusion  Protection does not work and of course at live update you get a RED X and in the taskbar there is also  RED X.  Other than the Intrusion Protection everything else works as far as I can tell. In my case it does NOT depend on who the user is, I just am denied the feature and that protection.

I was informed that it may be a corrupted WIndows Operating System file. I ran the cd program to check all the operating system files and NO problem at all.

SO, this really must be a Symantec problem that they just do NOT know how to fix. I was offered a refund.

But I want this program to work and I do not want a refund, so I will continue to call and ask for more help if they have not yet given up on this error.

At one point they tried to get me to pay for Virus Removal, but I refused since I had previously done that and would not pay a second time. One of their staff took pity on me and really worked hard to fix it but  we could not get it to work. I thought their people were usually good.

I am under frequent "attack", but all current scans including those done by the Symantec staff show NO malicious programs at this time. Also the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool found Nothing.

I have removed and reinstalled the Internet Security 2008 over ten times!!!!!  I have used the Removal Tool and had the Symantec staff do the removal also. No Good. The VRQ Tool had found some problems and repaired the, but still it does not work.

SO, both the 360 program and the Internet Security have a problem with Intrusion Protection.

IF any Symantec staff reads this please contact me.  I have over ten case numbers and the names of  staff that tried to fix this problem. Some tried very hard and seemed to be very good but it has NOT been fixed!!!

Please contact me and if anyone has any comments please make them.

Symantex went into the Registry and did a lot of work there and on files looking for a problem.

They think that it may have been related to a maliciouis program/virus but at this point all I know for sure is that they cannot fix it and Dell says my operating is NOT the problem.

AGAIN any help will be appreciated very much including any help from Symantex!!!!!!

In further comment to my above post I also get the following  error message

when I am in the Norton Protection Center and I click the "Fix " button  for the Intrusion Prevention Program:.

"Norton Internet Security has encountered  an Internal Program Error and need to close

(3003,204) after Installing Norton Internet Security 2008"

There are also other problems.

I have had malware programs such as "MRSC.EXE"  removed.

Let me know if you have any ideas.

Thank you.

I have this same problem.  What really bugs me is that Norton must know by now that this is an issue but when you contact support they act like it is a first time issue and all they offer is a re-install which we all know doesn't work.

I have been impressed with the support staff generally speaking.  But I'm beginning to believe that they have only one "fix" for evey issue, ie. "re-install".

I am running XP sp3 with 3 accounts: one admin, two limited.  Niether the limited accounts has "intrusion protection" and when I push the fix button in those accounts I get a message saying I must have admin rights to perform the fix. I can't just give the limited account full admin rights because of security and 90% of the time the computer is operated using the limited account.

This makes Norton 360 pretty useless.  I guess if they can't fix it soon I'll get a refund and buy something else.
