Intrusion Protection

My intrusion protection shuts itself off every few days.  "Fix it" does not work.  I have spent hours with technical support to no avail.  We have removed and reinstalled Norton 6 times.  Norton - this must be a scam on your part.  I asked for premier service since the matter could not be fixed and they advised me that I would have to pay.  I plan on filing a complaint with the BBB.  Obviously, technical support doesn't have the answer to this and there should be no reason to have to uninstall and reinstall this product every few days.  Does anyone have an answer?

Hi frekwalda,

Welcome to the Norton Community. What OS and SP do you have and is it 32 or 64 bit?

What was your previous security program and did you remove it before installing NIS 2011? Do you have any other security software installed besides NIS?

If you previously had NIS 2010 and things were working OK then you could have installed over the top. However if you had problems with it or if you NIS version older than 2010 it is recommended to uninstall first, run the Norton removal tool and then install the new version. Also, if you had anything other than NIS previously you would have had to use a removal tool to remove all remnants of it before installing 2011.

We can advise further after you have provided the additional information.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.

Allen

I have vista 64 bit and internet security 2011. With the techs help we did a removal tool twice. They even went into the regedit and made sure everything of 2010 was deleted. We did this twice also. Plus we ran the power eraser twice. Ran scan, quick and full. As the tech had control of my machine, he did a throughly job of finding everything and making sure no older version was on. As I said in my first post this took 2 techs and 2 days.

Everything is running but this intrusion protection will not fix itself with scan, one click support, etc.

Hi frekwalda,

Thanks for the additional information. You didn't say, do you have any other security software installed besides NIS? Also, was everything working OK while you were still on 2010?

Is Intrusion Prevention showing as OFF in the main NIS window? If so, what happens when you try to turn it ON?

Are you having any other unusual symptoms on your computer? Things such as unexpected popup's etc? Are you able to navigate to security websites such as security.symantec.com and mcafee.com?

I would recommend also running a scan with the free version of MalwareBytes which is an on-demand scanner only which will not interfere with NIS.

Please download, install, update and run the free version of MalwareBytes following the procedure outlined below. Any other recommendations will follow after you have a chance to provide any other details requested.

Please go to www.malwarebytes.org

1. Download Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware (mbam-setup.exe) free version and save it on your Desktop.
2. After downloading, double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
3. Follow the prompts and install as “default” only
4. Before the installation completes, check on the following prompts:
- Update Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware
- Launch Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware
5. Click “Finish.” The program will run automatically and you will be prompt to update the program before doing a scan. Please update.
6. Scan your computer thoroughly choosing a "full scan".
7. When scanning is finished click on “Show Results”
8. Make sure that all detected threats are marked with a check mark, click on "Remove Selected".
9. Restart your computer.

Please post the logs back to this thread using "add attachments" at the bottom.

Note: Sometimes the main site is blocked from attempts to download MalwareBytes. If this occurs please try to download from:
http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
Please do not download the Spyware Doctor which you will see on this page!

Best wishes.

The only thing I have is windows firewall that came with vista. Everything was working in 2010. The intrusion protection is always off when I restart the computer and I can move it to on, but nothing happens. Have done one click support to fix it, but always says "not fixed". Have everything updated with norton updates.

Can go to security websites like symantic no problem.

Did run the MAlwareBytes and found no viruses. Log is attached to this.

Hello I would in the IPS QA team. Can you reply to a couple of questions:

1. Can you write down what you see under "intrusion prevention" under the Security History log?

- it should show a couple of version #s, one will be engine version, another will be the "definitions" version. Can you let me know if you see these, and what they say?

2. If you click "Run Live Update" and watch the window that appears, does it show any errors or failures when it is complete?

- Thanks,

Michael Thibeau

When I run Live update, no errors are reported everything is updating no problem.

Intrusion Protection Engine Version is 4.8.0.17

                                    Definitions Set Version is 20101115.001

                                    Dvr Version is 9.5.0.22

Just bumping this as it is still not fixed, anybody have an answer for me?

Thanks

Did you try reinstalling?

tried reinstalling 3 times with 2 different techs with remote with them taking over and doing a clean wipe and install each time.

Well Intrusion Protection work for a few hrs yesterday. Today it is not working. I have done update after update, restarted my box. Seems to be doing a few updates every hour. After one update it worked, now nothing. Always have to turn on intrusion protection in Network Settings, hit apply and still nothing. One Click support always pop up for this and for Norton Update when I start my box. Updates always seem to work, but still this doesn't seem to fix the Intrusion protection. Any techs have any solution to this problem.
